At the conclusion of month-long Afinni Job Ready programme, some 50 employers and recruiters attended the job fair at the Lagos Island II Constituency, reports ITREALMS.

The event was part of a one-month employability and soft skills training program organized by Hon. Suleiman 'Lanre Afinni in collaboration with the Lagos State Employment Trust Fund (LSETF).

Suspected fraudsters disguising as assassins have threatened to eliminate the Founder of Penpushing Media, Dimeji Kayode-Adedeji, with an option to spare him if he could cough out N20million as saving grace.

The gang led by a member who identified himself as Femi Poly, at about 7.30am put a phone call across to the journalist that they had been assigned to eliminate him, but had a rethink on carrying out the operation.

‘We have your photograph, we are assigned by somebody close to you to kill you, but we observed that you are an elderly man, and decided not to carry out the assignment, but to reach out to you if you can offer us N20million’, the suspects said.

The gang operating with mobile phone numbers +2349036869898, +2348080858130 when asked who was their sponsor and what was the reason given to them to warrant the assignment to finish the journalist, said he would be provided the information after paying them the N20million demanded.

‘The person is your close associate, who told us he had issues with you, but can you keep it to yourself if we reveal the identity, which we shall do that after payment of the N20 million’, the suspects said.

When the journalist told them he has no such amount, the gang said they would reduce the amount to N500, 000, and after telling them he could also not afford such an amount, the suspects further reduced it to N150, 000.

The journalist again told them that he could not also raise the N150,000 immediately, and that he had N10,000 as at the time of the conversation, the gang said he should send the N10, 000, as part-payment, and immediately they provided an access bank account with number 0002884692 with the name *Aminu Adamu*.

Meanwhile, the journalist, however, said he has informed the police of the development adding that as at the time of filing this report police authorities have commenced investigation into the matter.

The remains of Deaconess Grace Sunday Eyiboh, mother of the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity and Spokesman to the Senate President, Hon. Eseme Eyiboh will be interred on November 9, 2024.

A press statement from his eldest son, Hon. Eseme Eyiboh and signed by the Head of Media, The Triumph of Mmaette, Philip Nyam, quoted as saying, Mama's burial shall be conducted by Qua Iboe Church at Community Secondary School, Akpautong village in Esit Eket LGA, Akwa Ibom State on the 9th November 2024 at 10am.

A foremost telecommunications engineer, Dr. Ernest Ndukwe, has been confirmed to chair the launch of the book titled 'Nigeria Drivers of Digital Prosperity' and the eWorld Forum '22. The Forum has a theme. 4G,5G, Broadband Connectivity and the economy.

Ndukwe was the Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Communications ( NCC).under whose 10=year tenure Nigeria recorded the globally acclaimed GSM license in 2001. Okoemu, UN expert for News Express 5th lecture

The United Nations Security Coordination Officer, Francis T. Okoemu, has confirmed his attendance at the News Express 5th Anniversary Lecture holding on Thursday, September 28, 2017, at Sheraton Hotel & Towers, Ikeja, Lagos, reports ITRealms.

Mr. Okoemu, a counter-terrorism expert who worked in the United Kingdom before joining the UN staff,, confirmed his attendance in an e-mail message to News Express Publisher Isaac Umunna. A statement issued on Saturday by Umunna quoted him as saying: “Yes, I will be in Nigeria for the News Express 5th Anniversary Lecture. It is something I want to be part of because News Express is a paper for which I have great respect.” 

A widely travelled Nigerian expatriate, Mr. Okoemu holds a BA Degree in Contemporary Military and International History,  a Master’s Degree in Terrorism and Security Studies, and PGD in Intelligence and Security Studies,  both awarded by the University of Salford, Manchester, UK. He has attended counter-terrorism courses in Israel, the United States of America, and other security courses in the UK, which include close protection, intelligence gathering and terrorism threat and response. He is a member of the UK’s Security Industry Authority (SIA) and was Chairman/CEO, Blackwell Security Consultancy, UK Ltd, before he was hired by the UN in 2015.

Mr. Okoemu joins a growing list of important personalities who have confirmed attendance at the News Express 5th Anniversary Lecture. The Guest Speaker, Alhaji Abubakar Sani Bello, Executive Governor of Niger State, will speak on “National Unity and the Demand for Restructuring — A Governor’s Perspective”.

The Lecture, starting from 12 p.m. prompt, will be chaired by Dr. Leo Stan Ekeh, Chairman of foremost Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Company, Zinox Technologies Ltd., and pioneer of online publishing in Nigeria.

30 countries set to grace Lagos Internet Freedom Forum ‘17

Some 30 countries have confirmed participation at the forthcoming 2017 Internet Freedom Forum (IFF), holding in Lagos, reports ITRealms.

The 2017 edition is organised by the Paradigm Initiative Nigeria (PIN), and has been scheduled between 25 and 27 April, 2017 at the Sheraton Hotel, Lagos, Nigeria.

Confirming this, the Executive Director of Paradigm Initiative Nigeria, Mr. ‘Gbenga Sesan, said the forum which has participants registered from over 30 countries will bring together stakeholders working on digital rights in Africa including the academia, civil society representatives, media, technology companies, government agencies and active citizens.

He also said that at IFF 2017, participants will engage in important conversations on how to safeguard the digital rights and freedoms of citizens in Africa and beyond.

According to him, the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), in its 32nd session in June 2016 had declared that “the rights that people enjoy offline should also be protected online.”

He stressed that the UN declaration is a forceful reminder to governments, telecommunications companies, civil society and all stakeholders that human rights across digital platforms must be upheld.

“As we spend more of our time online across digital platforms, protecting the same rights and freedoms people enjoy offline such as freedom of opinion, expression and association on online platforms becomes increasingly important; especially set against the background of recent Internet shutdowns, the arrests of ordinary citizens for expressing their right to freedom of expression online, the enacting of legislation which curtails free speech on digital platforms, and government mandated surveillance of citizens in Africa,” Sesan said.

He noted that there were at least 11 cases of Internet/Internet applications shutdowns in Africa in the year 2016, maintaining that the Internet has been shut-down in Anglophone speaking areas of Cameroon for about 2 months.

ICT Policy Programme Manager, PIN, Adeboye Adegoke, re-echoed the words of David Kaye, the UN Special Rapporteur for the protection of freedom of expression who described the shutdown as “an appalling violation of the right to freedom of expression and a violation of international law.” IFF has been a pre-eminent forum where the most important stakeholders in digital rights converge to shape conversations and policy direction to ensure that the digital rights of citizens are upheld.

ITRealms gathered that the success of previous editions, IFF 2017 promises to be bigger and better.

Director of Programmes, Paradigm Initiative, Ms Tope Ogundipe, said that as they expect some 200 stakeholders from 35 countries, proceedings at IFF 2017 will be bilingual – in English and French.

“Panellists and participants have been drawn using a multi-stakeholder approach. The Keynote will be delivered by Anriette Esterhuysen, the Executive Director of Association for Progressive Communications (APC),” she said.

Ogundipe gave the list of stakeholders from 35 countries to include 26 African countries; while others are Canada, Sri Lanka, United Kingdom and the United States among others.

She said that supporting the 2017 Internet Freedom Forum are Ford Foundation, Google, Facebook, AccessNow, Heinrich Böll Stiftung Nigeria, Mozilla Foundation, World Wide-Web Foundation and Internews, whereas official Media partners include ITRealms, TechCabal, RedMedia, NewsWire and TechWithCFA.
