Exclusive! Okere advocates business leaders must run inclusive enterprises - ITREALMS

ITREALMS:
The founder of the CWG Plc, Mr. Austin Okere has charged Entrepreneurs and Business Leaders on improving business climate by ensuring and running an inclusive enterprise, reports ITREALMS.

Okere in a keynote address to the Indian Professional Association (IPA) at the December 2018 monthly Forum, while dwelling on ‘Re-Imagining the Workplace for Greater Productivity’ advocated an inclusive business climate that disabuses employees suspicious of the leadership of their organisations.

He noted that over 70 per cent of the delegates had a deep distrust of their employees, stressing that staff is usually suspicious of the motives of the leadership initiating change.

“This is accentuated when the change does not seem to have the three distinctive characteristics of – Intensity, Integrity and Intelligence,” he said.

Okere said that many organizations do not clearly define their purpose or their cause, that is, why they exist and why anybody should care, to an extent that they become “a purpose and vision that employees can believe in and want to be a part of.”

According to him, it is not all about the pay but also about self-worth and pride in the job; the notion of being part of something special.

“Employees reported having more trust in their companies when the organization recognizes them for their contributions, provides opportunities for involvement and communicates effectively,” Okere said.

In some cases, he said, staffs are not loyal, ungrateful and always disgruntled, stealing or doing underhand deals, resigning without notice and consideration as well as the biggest complaint by far was that staffs are running their own businesses on the side; most times in the same business segment.

On the other hand, business leaders, he said, are forced to change from both internal and external pressures.

He cited some of the external pressures to include markets and customers, technology, competitive pressures and with leadership as internal.

Leadership, he said, is about change, management is about preservation; and therein lies the source of internal conflict.

The staff is usually suspicious of the motives of the leadership initiating change. This is accentuated when the change does not seem to have the three distinctive characteristics of – Intensity, Integrity and Intelligence.

The survey showed that change at work was linked to Employee Stress, Distrust and Intent to Quit. So, let us say the distrust between employers and employees is mutual. Why is this so, and could there a balance?

Employees reported having more trust in their companies when the organization recognizes them for their contributions, provides opportunities for involvement and communicates effectively.

Many management books, he said, talk about pride in working for great companies such as Coca-Cola, Chrysler and IBM; and more recently, Google, Tesla, and Facebook and Infosys. I recently read that it will be hard to tempt anybody working for Elon Musk even with a 50 per cent additional salary offer.

He further cited an instance in Nigeria with GT Bank, which is a good example of what could qualify as corporate apostles, maintaining that the GT Bank Staff were so proud to belong to the company, and so loyal to the brand, even when they left the bank.

“It is exactly this culture that we created at CWG Plc; the culture of touching a heart and asking for a hand,” he said.

Many employers are so disconnected from their employees that they would easily miss a major tragedy in their personal circumstances, which is not to say that we should run a nursery, but at the same time, employees are not machines, they are emotional beings.

“A little empathy can go a long way. I call it gathering coins of goodwill in your pocket. People joined our company because they believed in our why – providing technology solutions that enable growth.

“It greatly helped that we run an open and equitable system. Nothing is hidden. Nothing needs to be; if we are co-travellers on a common journey to a common destination.

“Openness engenders trust and engagement – lack of effective communication leaves room for dangerous rumours. Everybody knows when we are doing well, and also when the tide is against us.

“At one of our most challenging periods, following the global financial meltdown, we all agreed to a temporary 30 per cent cut in commissions, which will be accumulated and paid when our fortune turned (and Yes; everybody had a fixed and variable salary as part of skin in the game). Our contemporaries asked jokingly what I had given the staff at CWG that made them so loyal to the company.

“Perhaps it is this something about CWG that interested both Columbia Business School (CBS) and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to write case studies on the company for their MBA curricula. I speak about CWG Plc because this is the company I know.

“Our mantra was to treat everybody as an owner so that they see the big picture. The staffs have very high autonomy and there is a deep alignment, and therefore they displayed a deep sense of responsibility and accountability. We embrace mistakes as part of learning, albeit you cannot make the same mistake twice!”

Banks must absorb fintech innovations – Okere

The founder of Computer Warehouse Group (CWG) and Entrepreneur in Resident at Columbia Business School, New York, Mr. Austin Okere has said that banks must absorb financial technology innovations to remain relevant, reports ITRealms.

Speaking at the third quarterly forum of the Nigeria Information Technology Reporters Association (NITRA) in Lagos, at the weekend, Mr. Okere said banks must wear a new look in much the same way that retail did with the advent of electronic commerce (e-commerce).

This, he said, would afford banks to absorb fintech innovations currently blossoming globally and also improve the value chain by way of enhancing customer experience.

Okere, who also is a member of the World Economic Forum Global Agenda Council on Innovation and Intrapreneurship, emphatically said that banks and financial technology (FinTech) must collaborate for mutual benefit.

“Fintech companies in emerging markets have shown that with the right technology, it is possible to leapfrog to new forms of banking. Truth be told, Banks are best placed to continue to influence the future of Financial Services because of their huge branch network, solid reputations, and risk controls, as well as years of customer cultivation and loyalty,” he said.

Further, Okere pointed out that banks however, have to radically change the ‘we win when you lose’ mind-set, considering that credit card customers who default on payments have their interest rates hiked to the extent of repaying £2.50 for every £1 borrowed as revealed in a report by the Financial Services Authority in the U.K.

“This hardly fosters an endearing partnership,” he warned.

Earlier, NITRA chairman, Emma Okonji, welcomed participants to the third edition, noting that the forum was set up to avail stakeholders opportunity to interact with IT reporters in the country in the last four years, since its inception and solicited for more industry collaborations.

The forum was attended by the chairman, Conferences at Nigeria Computer Society (NCS), Jide Awe; Executive Secretary, Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), Gbolahan Awonuga; Managing Director, Global Accelerex, Tunde Ogungbade and  Divisional Head, Electronic Banking, Fidelity Bank, Ifeoma Onibuje.

Also in attendance included the President, Institute of Software Professionals of Nigeria (ISPON), Olorogun James Emadoye, and his counterpart at the Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NIRA) Mr. Sunday Afolayan, among others.

Okere, CWG boss joins authors to lecture @ Columbia Lean Launch Pad class

Austin Okere (CWG Boss), flanked by co-authors Steve Blank (left) and Bob Dorf (right)
at Columbia Business School, New York

The group chief executive officer, Computer Warehouse Group (CWG), Mr. Austin Okere has joined crop of leading world entrepreneurs as he became an instructor at the Steve Blank “Lean Launch Pad” Class, Columbia Business School (CBS).

ITRealms gathered this was part of the strategies to replicate the novel concept in Nigeria, recalling that Lean Launch Pad has joined forces with Startup Weekend, Udacity, TechStars and Startup America to offer some of the world’s most effective experiential entrepreneurship education.

By combining content from the world’s leading experts in customer development with local mentors and leaders in an intensive flipped-classroom style course, the movement was able to create a unique, effective experience for teams of entrepreneurs that are serious about growing a customer-driven startup.

The programme is already being offered in 15 cities around the world, with another 25 programmes launching in February with the goal to expand the programme to more than 100 cities in 2013.

Seasoned entrepreneurs such as Steve Blank are teaching NEXT in Silicon Valley, Andy Sack (TechStars Seattle founder) in Seattle, Alex Farcet (founder of Startupbootcamp) in multiple European cities, Eric Koester (founder of Zaarly) in Washington, DC with countless others joining.

The Eugene Lang Entrepreneurial Center at CBS, where Okere has been a guest lecturer since 2009, conveyed in their invitation their belief that his experience and contribution to entrepreneurial ship in emerging markets will provide unparalleled contribution to the class of aspiring entrepreneurs.

The Computer Warehouse Group, whose case study is a regular feature at Columbia Business School and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Boston, as well as many other institutions in Africa, including the prestigious Lagos Business School, chronicles the trials, challenges and triumph of entrepreneurship in the challenging environment that characterizes Sub Saharan Africa.

The Lean Launch Pad course provides real world, hands-on learning on what it is like to actually
start a high-tech company. It is a practical class where the goal is to create an entrepreneurial experience with all of the pressures and demands of the real world in an early stage start up.

The syllabus for the course is drawn majorly from the bestselling book, The Startup Owner’s Manual, co-authored by serial entrepreneurs Steve Blank and Bob Dorf, and the revolutionary new book, Business Model Generation co-authored by Alexander Osterwalder and Yves Pigneur.

These two books provide insights into powerful, simple, tested tools for understanding, designing, reworking, and implementing business models, through a business model canvas, that defines unique value propositions for specific customer segments, and the relationships and channels to deliver these to the customer to maximize revenue. It also helps the entrepreneur identify key resources, partners and key activities to be performed and at what cost.

The course provides a comprehensive step-by-step guide to getting startups right. It walks entrepreneurs through the customer development process that gets them out of the building to develop wining products that customers will buy.

There is an increasing global focus and emphasis on entrepreneurship as the most viable vehicle for job creation. According to the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) 2011 report, there is an upsurge in entrepreneurship around the world, with a total number of about 400 million spread across 54 countries. The GEM in its 2006 report revealed that there was a systematic relationship between a country’s level of economic development and its level of entrepreneurial activity. It noted that countries with similar per capita GDP tend to exhibit similar levels of entrepreneurial activity.

At low levels of per capita GDP, industrial structure is characterized by the prevalence of many very small enterprises. As per capita income increases, industrialization and economies of scale allow larger and established firms to satisfy the increasing demand of growing markets and to increase their relative role in the economy.

On his involvement in the Block Week Course at Columbia Business School Okere said “I believe that it is better to have a thousand millionaires than a ten billionaires. It is better still to have a million people with access to a hundred thousand dollars, if they can be taught how to nurture and grow it through entrepreneurial endeavor; and I intend to do something about it, so when I was invited, I did not hesitate in accepting, with a view to bringing the concept to Africa”.

Okere whose entrepreneurial advocacy has taken him on similar teaching expeditions across Africa; through Nigeria, Kenya and Tanzania also remarked “I like to put the story of the Computer Warehouse Group out there because such success stories contribute immensely to the attraction of capital to the region, which combined with the entrepreneurial acumen and the youthful population unleashes waves of economic boom, which in turn lifts the pile at bottom of the pyramid into the more desirable networked economy of the emerging global village. Besides, it provides the perfect opportunity to be a brand ambassador for Africa”.

Okere, one of Nigeria’s foremost entrepreneurs has made quite a name for himself over the past 20 years, growing the Computer Warehouse Group into a $130 million revenue company, with 650 staff spread across Nigeria, Ghana, Uganda and Cameroon. In 2012 he was named ICT Man of the Decade by ICT Watch Africa Digital Network, and CWG was named Conglomerate of the Year. The organizers cited CWG’s immense contributions toward the growth and development of Information and Communications Technology (ICT), youth empowerment through ICT education, and nation building.
