The award-winning Chief Operating
Officer (COO) of Digital Encode Limited, Mr. Peter Adewale Obadare, has prescribed
what he described as the Confidentiality, Integrity and Availability (CIA)
panacea to boost the information security readiness of every internet user,
especially in Nigeria, reports ITRealms.
Making this prescription at the
first-ever Cyber Security Master Class for Information and Communication
Technology (ICT) Journalists in the country, at the VCP Hotel, Victoria Island,
Lagos, last weekend, Obadare said this prescription has become imperative given
the number of both company and personal data that ought to be protected on
daily basis.
According to him, most of the
things Internet or data users cherish and worthy of protection are mainly
company and personal data as well as critical systems cutting across electronic
mail (email), network, file storage, and online services, to name a few.
Obadare also told ITRealms that within the aforementioned,
what makes them essential is the likely information exposure that could occur
when security breaches occur, in addition for users to be wary of malicious
editing, or Denial of Service (DoS) attacks.
He pointed out that with
the users being aware of confidentiality, integrity and availability of those
information exposures and attendant implications as well as the effect of
malicious codes or DoS, their effects could be well managed to a minimal point.
Obadare went on to define Information Security (IS) as the
protection of information and information systems from unauthorized access,
use, disclosure, disruption, modification, or destruction in order to provide
confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
Information security, he said, is achieved through implementing
technical, management, and operational measures designed to protect the
confidentiality, integrity and availability of information.
The goal of an IS programme, he told ITRealms, is to
understand, manage, and reduce the risk to information under the control of the
organization.
Pointing out that very often, security infringement happens
via insider threat, which he described as “Enemy by the water dispenser” which
paves the way for instance, for internal malicious users to get remote access
to email passwords of a person.
On the other hand, outsider threats, Obadare code-named ‘show
me the money’ tend to open-up a system for hackers to get access to company’s
application.
Whilst the combination of both outsiders with insiders
knowledge, he said, could pass for deal or no deal which leverages social
engineering.
He buttressed the danger of cybercrime on its cost to the
world which has been estimated to be in excess of $6 trillion annually by 2021
according to the Cybersecurity Ventures.
The 2017 Cyberthreat Defence Report, he said, showed that
security biggest obstacle is low security awareness of personnel.
“But when you do due diligence, and care what information
you share, hackers cannot hack you,” he said.
Obadare further shared some Digital Encode milestones
including the several awards on cybersecurity in 2017, whereas in 2015, the
company won the Global Cyberlympics as African Champion for the second time,
among others.
