NPO commends Tinubu’s directive to FCCPC to investigate big tech, AI platforms over content exploitation - ITREALMS

The Nigerian Press Organisation (NPO) has strongly commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, following his executive directive ordering the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) to launch a comprehensive investigation into global technology giants and generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) platforms operating within Nigeria, reports ITREALMS.

The NPO noted that this decisive presidential intervention is a direct result of a joint petition and high-level advocacy spearheaded by its constituent bodies, which include the Newspaper Proprietors' Association of Nigeria (NPAN), the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE), the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), the Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria (BON), and the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP).

Notable professional media entities comprising the Nigeria Press Organisations, Guild of Corporate Online Publishers, Nigeria Union of Journalists, Nigerian Guild of Editors, International Press Institute alongside some media based civil society organisations (CSOs) have demanded for immediate investigation into the recent unlawful arrest, detention and torture of the Editor of FirstNews newspapers, Mr. Segun Olatunji by military personnel, reports ITREALMS.
The group in a joint Press statement available to ITREALMS signed by leadership of these media organisations, media associations and professional bodies as well as civil society organisations expressed deep concern and strong condemnation regarding the recent unlawful arrest, detention, brutalisation and torture of Mr. Segun Olatunji, Editor of FirstNews newspapers, by military personnel in response to stories published by the media outlet.

The Nigerian media has advanced plans to inaugurate on Monday, the nine-member board of the National Media Complaints Commission (NMCC), also known as the National Ombudsman, reports

The Nigerian Press Organisation (NPO) has stepped up a new Ombudsman mechanism with a nine-man board of the National Media Complaints Commission (NMCC), otherwise known as the National Ombudsman, reports ITREALMS.

ITREALMS that NMCC, is a major step by the industry to strengthen public confidence in the media through prompt resolution of issues bordering on ethical breaches in media content.
