The Nigeria Computer Society (NCS) through its 2024 Nigerian Information Technology Merit Awards (NITMA) at the weekend conferred fellowships to some members and distinguished Nigerians, which came in two folds, namely professional and honourary, reports ITREALMS.

These include some 39 professional fellows and seven honourary fellows, just as the Chairman, Zinox Technologies Group, Dr. Leo-Stan Ekeh emerged the Elite Leader’s IT Growth and Development awardee.

The Paradigm Initiative (PIN), a leading pan-African organization championing digital rights and inclusion, has announced the selection of seven finalists from across Africa and India for the 2024 Digital Rights and Inclusion Learning Lab (DRILL) Fellowship.

Chosen from a highly competitive pool of 1,490 applicants, this year’s cohort will play a pivotal role in advancing digital rights in their respective countries, including Tunisia, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Burundi, Uganda, Namibia, and India.

The Director, Public Affairs of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Mr. Reuben Muoka and the Head, Media Relations Management of the Commission, Dr. Omoniyi Ibietan, have been inducted into as fellows of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), reports ITREALMS.

Their inductions were approved among others by the Council of the institute, and were held at the 2022 Annual General Meeting (AGM) held at the International Conference Center, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja.

The Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria Prof. Yemi Osibanjo and the Vice Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, Prof Eyitope Ogunbodede are to headline honourary fellowships at the 2018 National Information Technology Merit Awards (NITMA), reports ITREALMS.

Disclosing this to ITREALMS, the National President of the Nigeria Computer Society (NCS), Prof Adesola Aderounmu, whose organization hosts NITMA, said the duo were chosen for their dedication and exemplary service to Information Technology (IT) growth and development in Nigeria.

“Honorary Fellowship will be conferred on the Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria Prof. Yemi Osibanjo and the Vice Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University, Prof Eyitope Ogunbodede for their dedication and exemplary service to IT growth and development in Nigeria,” he said.

This, he said, is in line with the advocacy efforts of NCS to achieve sustainable development in Nigeria through Information Technology, NCS promotes excellence and significant impact.

“I urge you to join NCS to celebrate the champions who are using technology to change society for good,” the president said.

Yearly, he recalled that NCS recognizes, celebrates and rewards outstanding excellence and exceptional contributions in the Information Technology field through the unique national platform NITMA provides.

“Our focus as a society is progress for the sector in particular and for the nation as a whole,” he asserted.

Pointing out that NCS, as the acknowledged professional authority facilitating the development of an inclusive, globally competitive, prosperous and knowledge-based Nigeria, is committed to recognizing and rewarding outstanding hard work and excellence in accelerating IT development.

Also, Aderounmu noted that professional fellowships will be conferred on members of NCS who are recognized as authorities in their field of computing and have distinguished themselves through significant contribution to the growth of Information Technology through their professional expertise and activities.

28 Nigerian scientists become fellows of ASI – ITREALMS

Twenty-Eight Nigerian scientists and technologists have become fellows of the African Scientific Institute (ASI), reports ITREALMS.

ASI, ITREALMS gathered is made up of scientists and technologists of African descent in the diaspora who have distinguished themselves and recently become Fellows of the institute.

President and CEO, African Scientific Institute, Lee O. Cherry made this disclosure to ITREALMS, saying the membership is now 1,053 with the latest ASI fellows from 56 countries globally.

Chidoka joins PEFON professional fellows

The Professional Excellence Foundation of Nigeria in line with its mandate of recognizing professionals who have excelled in their chosen fields, have chosen on merit Osita Chidoka, the Ike Obosi, for the distinguished fellow award, reports ITRealms.

Chidoka apart from serving as the Minister of Aviation in the last regime in Nigeria, was also the Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps, where he transformed the agency to an award winning organisation.

In the process, the FRSC won various international awards and became, according to the World Bank, a model for other road safety organisations across Africa.

These were some of the achievements that earned Chidoka the Distinguished Fellow Award.

Chidoka obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree in Management from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka and a Masters of Public Policy degree from the prestigious School of Public Policy at George Mason University in the United States of America.

He has a Certificate in Global Strategy and Political Economy from Oxford University, UK and a Graduate Diploma in Maritime and Ports Management from the National University of Singapore.

The induction of Chidoka will take place at The Hotel Victoria Palace, Victoria Island, Lagos on Thursday (April 27, 2017).

PEFON, a non-profit and a Non-Governmental Organization, was established primarily to mitigate the dire shortage in the supply of professionally qualified and competent manpower for the various sectors of Nigerian economy.

The Foundation was an initiative of Dr. Dipo Bailey and it is an off shoot of Bailey Professional Training and Development Center, which was established in 1998.

The Foundation is governed by a Board of Trustees made up of distinguished professionals, including Engr. Edet Amana, Alhaji Mohammed Hayatudeen, Akinbayo Adenubi and Dr. Stella Okoli.

The Board is headed by Prince Julius Adelusi Adeluyi.

PEFON's major strength as a Foundation lies in its Board of Trustees, the Council and Distinguished fellows who are accomplished industrialists, technocrats, qualified professionals in diverse areas, present and past presidents of professional institutes and other core professionals who have excelled in private and public administration and who have distinguished themselves in various fields within and outside Nigeria.

These distinguished professionals under the umbrella of PEFON periodically organize fora to deliberate on policies for promoting development of Nigeria economically and industrially.

After a stellar and award-winning public career, Chidoka joined Mobil Producing Nigeria, a subsidiary of Exxon Mobil Corporation, as a Senior Adviser on Government and Business Relations. 

It was in this role, in 2007, that the then President of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, sought him out and appointed him as the Corps Marshal and Chief Executive of the Federal Road Safety Corps.

His leadership of the FRSC led to the transformation of the Commission to a functional Lead Agency in Road Traffic Administration and Safety Management in the country, driven by information and communication technology. 

His visionary leadership and pursuit of global standard at FRSC led to the certification of the Commission by the Standards Organization of Nigeria, which conferred the Quality Management System Certificate (ISO 9001:2008 Certification) on the Commission on April 15, 2013.

In recognition of Chidoka’s enormous contributions to national and community development, he was invested with the traditional title of Ike-Obosi (Strength of Obosi) and a member of Ndi-Ichie, the highest decision making body of Obosi Traditional Council of Anambra State in May, 2009.

He bagged the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria Merit Award on November 27, 2010, and the Institute of Logistics Management of Nigeria Fellowship Award in July 2011.

He was conferred with the Distinguished Alumnus Award for Good Governance and Model on Road Safety by the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Nigeria, Nsukka on November 12, 2011.

And in recognition of his patriotic disposition to his fatherland, former President, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, on November 14, 2011 conferred him with Nigeria’s national honour of Officer of the Federal Republic.

He won the Sun and Hallmark Newspapers Public Servant of the Year 2012 awards and under him, the FRSC won Leadership Newspapers Government Agency of the year 2012 award.

Chidoka was born on July 18, 1971.

ICANN59 fellows emerged

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) announces 55 individuals from 43 countries selected to participate in ICANN's Fellowship program at the 59th Public Meeting in Johannesburg, South Africa from 26-29 June 2017, reports ITRealms.

ICANN59, ITRealms gathered is a Policy Forum, hence only alumni of the Fellowship Programme were eligible to apply.

These successful candidates represent all sectors of society including; civil, government, ccTLD operations, academia, facets of the business community, technical, security and end user groups.

The Fellowship program seeks to create a broader and more diverse base of knowledgeable constituents with priority given to candidates currently living in underserved and underrepresented communities around the world, those who represent diversity of gender, sector, region, experience, expertise and/or have established financial need.

An independent selection committee assessed the 72 Fellowship applications received for this meeting.

ICANN57 names 15 fellows for NextGen

Fifteen successful candidates have emerged from various Universities in the Asian Pacific Region to participate in the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) Community Members at the forthcoming ICANN57 Meeting in Hyderabad India, reports ITRealms.

The meeting slated for November 3 through 9, 2016, ITRealms gathered would afford successful candidates to engage in studies that encompass policy, business, technical, security, law, and communications.

ITRealms also gathered that five (5) additional selectees who attended a previous ICANN Meeting as NextGenners will now serve as Ambassadors for these newcomers to ICANN.

A press statement made available to ITRealms informed that candidates were assessed by an independent Selection Committee after submitting an online application and meeting the initial Program requirements.

ICANN further said, the successful candidates were selected based on their current studies and interest in the work happening in the Internet ecosystem related to global policy and Internet Governance (IG).

“They must commit to engage with and learn from the ICANN Community over the Meeting week as well as produce a 10-15 minute presentation related to the work of ICANN and their studies.

51 fellows successful for ICANN57

The global coordinating organization for internet unique identifier, otherwise known as Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has released 51 candidates as successful fellows to India towards the 57 ICANN public meeting in earlier November this year, reports ITRealms.

The public meeting, ITRealms gathered that those selected were from 35 countries and they will be attending the public meeting in Hyderabad, India, between 3 and 9 November 2016. 

ICANN also said of those 51 selected, 17 are returning fellows from at least one previous meeting and various experience levels, 10 of whom will be coaches to the 34 attending as first time fellows.

The selected fellows, ICANN said, represent all sectors of society including civil, government, ccTLD Operations, academia, facets of the business community, technical, security and end user groups.

ITRealms further recalls that an independent selection committee assessed the 319 fellowship applications received for this meeting; 76 of those met minimum requirements for possible selection. 

ICANN in a newsletter made available to ITRealms said priority was given to applicants who not only meet minimum program requirements, but who are current residents of developing and least developed nations and who are interested in participating in ICANN and its supporting organizations, advisory committees, stakeholder and constituency groups.

Breaking News: 13 Nigerian scientists, techies named African Science Fellows

Thirteen Nigerian scientists and technologists have become Fellows of the African Scientific Institute (ASI), reports ITRealms.

ASI President and chief executive officer (CEO), Lee O. Cherry disclosed this to ITRealms, saying that the new fellows are made of scientists and technologists of the African Diaspora and Africa numbering 50 in total in the last one year.

Cherry also listed these 13 Nigerian scientists and technologists to include Oluyomi S Adeyemi, Ph.D. (Nigeria/Japan): Biochemistry, Olutayo Kehinde Boyinbode, Ph.D. (Nigeria): Computer Science, Olubukola O. Babalola, Ph.D. (Nigeria/South Africa): Microbiology, Isaac A Adeyinka, Ph.D. (Nigeria): Animal Science.

Others include Oliver Chukwujekwu Ezechi,M.D., Ph.D. (Nigeria) who doubles as Deputy Director (Research) and Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist Head, Clinical Sciences Division, Nigerian Institute of Medical Research(NIMR); Oluminde A.
