Exclusive: Governance Vacuum: How Nigeria’s failed political class silently partnering multi-dollar terror syndicate - ITREALMS
ITREALMS ... making leadership SENSE with digital news!
An exclusive analysis of data from the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) and international sanctions reports reveals a chilling link between endemic political corruption and the sophisticated financing architecture sustaining Nigeria's most lethal terror groups. The prevailing view among citizens, that the escalation of groups like Boko Haram and ISWAP is directly tied to the failings of politicians, is not merely a public opinion; it is the fundamental vulnerability that allows terrorist funding to thrive. This suggests that the crisis is less a failure of kinetic warfare and more a catastrophic failure of governance and political will.
Prelude:Nigeria's political corruption creates a governance vacuum, enabling terror syndicates like Boko Haram to co-opt the digital economy; from KFR to Fintech, turning state failure into illicit funding, writes WEEKEDDIGITS INVESTIGATIVE TEAM.

Exclusive: VAS operators may be decommissioned over fraud – ITREALMS
Telecommunications
regulator in the country, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) is
tinkering on decommissioning some Value Added Service (VAS) Providers in the
country, reports ITREALMS.
This
follows the recent NCC investigations which showed that most of the VAS
providers are conniving with Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) to defraud unsuspecting
telecom consumers.
ITREALMS investigations revealed that VAS
Operators in the country cut across Value Added Services (VAS) include Call Centre
services (CCS), Call Directory Services (CDS), Content Services Using Shortcodes
(SNC), Prepaid Calling Services (PPC) and Special Number Services (SNS), with membership largely drawn from the Association of Telecom Companies of Nigeria (ATCON).
NCC
in a official communications available to ITREALMS of intention to sanction
some of the VAS operators depending on the magnitude of their involvement which
is under review at Maitama-Abuja office of the regulator.
ITREALMS gathered that the sanctions
could be suspension or outright decommission in the overall interests of telecom consumers.
“We wish to use this
opportunity to inform the general public that the Commission may suspend or
outrightly decommission some VAS platforms and services in the overall
interests of consumers.
“We assure consumers
that these measures will be implemented with minimal inconvenience to them, and
trust that we can count on the understanding of consumers who may be affected
by these measures,” official statement from NCC said in part.
Further, the
Commission assured all stakeholders of continuous use of all available
resources to protect the rights of consumers of telecoms services and to ensure
that they get appropriate value for their interactions with service and
platform providers.
Currently, ITREALMS confirms that Nigeria has some 368 VAS
operators as at the time of filing this report.
These, ITREALMS
also gathered comprised of Call
Centre Services (CCS) - 16; Call Directory Services (CDS) -6; Content Services
Using Shortcodes (SNC) - 336; Prepaid Calling Services (PPC) - 1; and Special
Number Services (SNS) - 9.

Exclusive: Telecom operators, NCC, tighten regulations on bulks, fraudulent SMS
Telecommunications
operators in the country have taken a key step in ensuring fraudulent Short
Messaging Services (SMS) are curtailed, ITRealms
can exclusively reports.
Investigations
by ITRealms showed that
telecommunications operators, under the aegis of Association of Licensed Telecommunications
Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) alongside the regulator of the industry, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC)
recently reached this conclusion.
According to
our sources, the operators have suspended the delivery of messages with only phone
number as its “Sender identity.”
Industry
observers opined that with this, the unsolicited bulk messages by fraudulent
persons will be reduced to the minimum as they may not want to use their identity.
In addition,
this will aid the NCC’s rules on unsolicited calls and SMS, especially with its
Do-Not-Disturb (DND) service and dedicated the short code “2442” to enable telecom
consumers take an informed and independent decision on what messages they may
wish to receive from network providers.
ITRealms recalls that Association of
Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) prides itself as the
industry body for all telecommunications companies and those providing
subsidiary services to telecommunications service providers in Nigeria.
NCC on the other hand, is the independent regulatory
authority for the telecommunications industry in Nigeria, created under Decree
number 75 by the Federal Military Government of Nigeria on 24 November 1992.
