ETSI unveils new group on non-Internet Protocol networking addressing 5G services - ITREALMS

The European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) has unveiled its new group on non-Internet Protocol networking addressing for Fifth Generation (5G) services, reports ITREALMS.

This ETSI said entails the creation of a new Industry Specification Group addressing Non-IP Networking (ISG NIN). ITREALMS gathered that the kick-off-meeting for ISG-NIN took place on 25 March and John Grant, BSI, was elected as the ISG Chair, and Kevin Smith, Vodafone, was elected as ISG Vice Chair.

“With the increasing challenges placed on modern networks to support new use cases and greater connectivity, Service Providers are looking for candidate technologies that may serve their needs better than the Transmission Control Protocol and the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)-based networking used in current systems.ITREALMS equally gathered that ISG-NIN, according to Claire Boyer, intends to develop standards that define technologies to make more efficient use of capacity, have security by design, and provide lower latency for live media.

In 2015, ITREALMS recalled, several mobile operators identified problems with the TCP/IP-based technology used in the Fourth Generation (4G) networks, which included the complex and inefficient use of spectrum resulting from adding mobility, security, quality-of-service, and other features to a protocol that was never designed for them.

In addition,ITREALMS gathered, the subsequent fixes and workarounds designed to overcome these problems themselves incur increased cost, latency, and greater power-consumption. TCP/IP was therefore deemed as non-optimal for the more advanced 5G services.

Further, ETSI noted that its Industry Specification Group on Next Generation Protocols (ISG NGP), created in 2015, had the mission to analyse these problems and suggest alternative solutions. ISG NGP identified candidate technologies that would address the issues directly, dramatically reducing header sizes, per-packet processing, and latency experienced by live media, while remaining compatible with the current Internet and with newer technologies such as SDN and MPLS. ISG NGP also published a set of Key Performance Indicators that allow an objective assessment of the ability of networking protocols to meet operators’ needs.

“Today, we see the evolution of ISG NGP in a new group dedicated to the specification of alternative technologies to better serve the new 5G applications, as well as being more efficient and easier to manage, with lower CapEx and OpEx, when used for current applications.

“It is expected that the work of ISG NIN will be applicable initially to private mobile networks such as factory automation, and then expanded to public systems, both in the Core network and eventually end to end including the Radio elements.

“The group’s first output will be a Report detailing the shortcomings of TCP/IP, and how the new alternative system would overcome those shortcomings. ISG NIN will also work on specifying how the technologies initially identified by ISG NGP will form the basis of the new protocols, as well as creating a framework for testing the efficiency and effectiveness of the new protocols, including over radio,” a press statement from ETSI available to ITREALMS read.

Big data and mission-critical systems such as industrial control, intelligent vehicles. and remote medicine cannot be addressed the best way with current TCP/IP-based networking” says John Grant, Chair of ISG NIN.

“The IP stack and OSI layer model have undeniably enabled global connectivity – but since they originated in the 1970s, their design reflects the demands and capabilities of that era. Reassessing the fundamental design principles of network protocols offers the opportunity to deliver performance, security and efficiency gains for 2020 access networks and use cases, and may be achieved with simplification rather than expensive add-ons. The work of ETSI ISG NIN, in co-operation with industry organizations, can provide operators with a cutting-edge protocol suite to add to their service portfolio” says Kevin Smith, Vice Chair of ISG NIN.

Edo State keen in addressing teachers shortage, applauds Igbanke Forum

The government of Edo State has said it’s taking decisive steps to solve the problem of shortage of teachers in some schools in the state, applauding the efforts Igbanke Unity Forum (IUF) on improving education in the community, reports ITRealms.

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, made this disclosure at Igbanke in Orhionmwon Local Government Area of the state, when Igbanke Unity Forum (IUF), a non-governmental organisation (NGO), donated 4,500 branded exercise books to three schools in the area, at the weekend.

Governor Obaseki, represented by the Commissioner for Education, Hon. Christopher Adesotu, said though the shortage of school teachers was not peculiar to Igbanke, the state government has set the machinery in motion to address the matter.

He said his administration appreciates the partnership with NGOs, corporate bodies, and old students’ associations, adding that such collaboration helps in checking the challenges in the educational sector.

Adesotu said Obaseki’s administration has a strong commitment to revamp basic education in the state, and lauded the philanthropic gesture of IUF members in giving back to their community.

Spokesman for the group, Edomaruse Collins said the forum has over 4,000 members spread across the world and its membership is open to indigenes of Igbanke only.

“IUF embarked on this project as a deliberate move to support your government’s bold steps so far taken to revamp the state’s basic education. No government, no matter how benevolent, can single-handedly provide all the educational needs of its citizens”.

He said members of the IUF are motivated to contribute their quota to the development of schools in Igbanke because they were uncomfortable with the state of some of the schools.

He said the books are for three schools in Igbanke, which include, Igbanke Grammar School; Igbanke Mixed Secondary School and Omolua Mixed Secondary School.

He appealed to the state government to fix the decrepit school buildings as well as address the shortage of teachers in the three schools as the ratio of teachers to students was not encouraging.

NIPOST adopts 3 word addressing system

The Nigeria’s postal services (NIPOST), has adopted the innovative global addressing system known as what3words to improve delivery services, reports ITRealms.

Nigeria, ITRealms reports, is the seventh country to adopt what3words and the third in Africa.

The system, ITRealms gathered, is already being used for mail deliveries in Mongolia, Sint Maarten, Côte d’Ivoire, Djibouti, Tonga and Solomon Islands, hence its anticipated that Nigeria as Africa’s largest economy and most populous country with approximately 184 million inhabitants, has the seventh largest population in the world.

ITRealms reports that Nigeria’s poor addressing system means that only 20 per cent of its inhabitants receive mail at home. While 79 per cent of homes and businesses cannot receive deliveries to the door, and the remaining 1 per cent receive their mail using one of the 478,000 P.O. boxes throughout the country.

In addition, ITRealms also gathered that a postcode system is not optimised with only 5 per cent of mail gets properly addressed with the postcode, hampering the efforts of NIPOST to improve quality of service.

Nigeria’s Postmaster General, Barrister Bisi Adegbuyi, said they are very pleased to be collaborating with what3words as an addressing solution with huge potential to unlock opportunities.

“Better addressing is a key to NIPOST’s agenda, which aims to transform, innovate, and deliver more services to more people all over the country” Adegbuyi said.

Chris Sheldrick, CEO and Co-founder of what3words said that with a rapidly growing ecommerce ecosystem, Nigeria is a very exciting country to be working with.

“Postal services have a critical role in building a strong economy and NIPOST are firmly focused on the future, and are taking steps to modernise and grow their capacity and range of services,” he said.

ITRealms  recollects that what3words, is an innovative global addressing system which divided the world in 57 trillion 3m x 3m squares; each with a unique 3 word address, that are easy to remember, and to share via email, text or over the phone.

Sheldrick emphasised that the addresses are pre-assigned, using an algorithm and each 3 word address refers to a precise 3m x 3m square somewhere in the world.

The what3words Application Programming Interface (API), he said, is being integrated by business, apps and services across the world in a wide variety of sectors.

“It is also used by individuals via the free what3words app. The system is currently available in 14 languages, with many more in development, and it is also optimised for voice recognition,” he said.

On the other hand, NIPOST is the designated postal operator for Nigeria with 10,093 employees, spread among 2,795 post offices throughout the country and handles around 10 billion mail items a year.

NIPOST is currently working to modernise and streamline its operations and has plans to diversify profitably into financial services, e-commerce and logistics, insurance, shipping and property, to provide quality postal services that satisfy the aspirations of all stakeholders.

Culture, tourism key to addressing lean resources – Lai Mohammed

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has described culture and tourism as keys to addressing the challenges posed by lean resources and unemployment in the country, reports ITRealms.

He said this at the Third Festival Colloquium of Lagos at 50 at the weekend, saying at this period of tough economic challenges, caused by the steep in global oil prices, Nigeria has no choice than to look for other viable means of earning needed resources for developmental purposes and to generate employment for its teeming youths.


''In this search for a new economic paradigm, tourism, arts and culture have been identified as the most viable sector of the economy to explore. Culture drives tourism, and both are good for creating jobs, reducing crime and diversifying the economy, three of the cardinal programs of the Buhari Administration,'' he said.

Mohammed also said the potentials of the sector in boosting the country's economy had been attested to by many international agencies, including the British Council whose 2013 report of the Lagos Pilot Study on the ‘Mapping of Nigerian Creative Industries revealed that the creative businesses surveyed in the mapping exercise contributed  N2,547,300,490.26 during the reference period, with 61% of the total Gross Value Added (GVA) derived from the film industry alone. Fashion and music contributed 26% and 13% respectively.

Nigeria, he noted, being richly endowed with globally-recognized sites and monuments, thus imperative for the country to convert its tourist sites to tourist attraction and bring the culture and tourism sector to the mainstream of the economy.

The Minister said the government is working with the World Tourism Organization, the UN agency charged with the promotion of responsible, sustainable and universally-accessible tourism, to turn around the fortunes of the sector.

''Distinguished ladies and gentlemen, the foundation has been laid and the ground work done. It is time for all States of the Federation to pick up the gauntlet and explore the vast tourism potentials available to us and by so doing, improve our economy and provide employment,'' he said.

FG says ‘National Addressing System, panacea against crime’

The Federal Government has described the holistic National Addressing System (NAS) as the panacea against crime in the country, reports ITRealms.

Speaking through the Communications Ministry, the Federal Government urged for the establishment of a national addressing system nationwide.

According to a press release made available to ITRealms by the Special Assistance on Media to Minister of Communications, Victor Oluwadamilare, this was contained in a presentation by the acting Post Master General of Federation, Mr. CYB Ndahi, to the minister of in Abuja.

 According to him, the new development will help individual to secure a legal identity, facilitating the planning and implementation of public policies and to fight against any national disasters and diseases.

He further explained that this is necessary to reinforce national and international security and helps in sending mails, adding that people need addresses to be recognized as members of their communities.

“The national addressing system will help individual secure a legal identity and facilitate the planning and implementation of public policies and services. It is also useful to fight against national disasters and diseases. It will reinforce national and international security and enable tax levy better and dispatch emergency services.”

Ndahi maintained that the establishment of national addressing system is the only way to control criminality and fight corruption, adding that government should do all in its capacity to ensure it work out.

“Banks and other commercial institutions need accurate addresses to locate their customers against fraudulent activities. Water boards and electrical distribution companies need accurate addresses for distribution of their bills and revenue collection, he noted.”
