A French journalist with African Intelligence, Mr. Antoine Galindo has been released by the authorities in Addis Ababa, the Ethiopian capital, reports ITREALMS.

Galindo, ITREALMS gathered, was arrested on 22 February while on assignment for Africa Intelligence in Ethiopia.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has officially unveiled the Coalition for Digital Africa (CfDA), aimed at expanding the Internet on the continent of Africa, reports ITREALMS.

CfDA, ITREALMS gathered was conceived by ICANN, and is an alliance of like-minded organizations committed to building a robust and secure Internet infrastructure to bring more Africans online.

AIDFA Summit 2016 to focus on technological innovations

The Aid & International Development Forum Africa (AIDFA) Summit 2016 holding in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, will focus on technological innovations and best practice to improve aid delivery and development strategy in East Africa, ITRealms reports. The summit which will take place between February 2 to 3, at the United Nations Conference Centre, will play host to more than 250 senior representatives and advisors from regional governments, UN agencies, international and regional NGOs, CBOs, investors and donors, research institutes and the private sector. The AIDF, ITRealms gathered, has been building long-lasting partnerships between key actors in the humanitarian and development sectors for over 13 years. The agenda has been developed in consultation with key organisations, such as WFP, IRFC, World Vision, USAID, UNICEF, World Bank, Save the Children, UN Habitat, CRS, FHI360, Oxfam, Habitat for Humanity International, IRD and will include case studies, panel discussions, workshops, and interactive roundtable sessions. According to a press release by AIDF, the summit will provide comprehensive overview of the latest trends around humanitarian logistics, community health, security of aid workers and communities, camp management, mobile for development, financing, communication with communities and among aid agencies. The unique event format combines high level strategic information with multiple specialist topic tracks and structured networking as well as peer-to peer round table discussions enabling full and frank sharing of views, experience and vital feedback within the community. Osibanjo in Ethiopia for South-Sudan mediation summit

The Vice President Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, on Sunday departed Abuja to represent President Muhammadu Buhari at a peace mediation summit on the situation in South Sudan tomorrow in Addis Ababa, reports ITRealms.

Confirming this, the Senior Special Assistant to the Vice President, Media and Publicity, Mr. Laolu Akande, told ITRealms in a press statement on Sunday that the summit would be on the platform of the Inter-Governmental Authority (IGAD) Plus. 

He explained that IGAD is the regional trade group of eight African countries from the Horn of Africa, Nile Valley and the Great Lakes.

Akande also said that participating in IGAD for this important peace effort are a number of leading African nations including Nigeria, and others like the United States, China, United Nations, European Union, African Union among others in the international community.

The Vice President who will join other leaders from the continent and outside including the Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Mr. Hailemariam Dessalegn, will return to Abuja later on Monday.

PACCI set to host confab’13 in Addis Ababa

The Pan-Africa Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PACCI) has advanced plans to host its 2013 international conference of the African Chambers of Commerce and Industry in the city of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Officials of PACCI confirmed to ITRealms that the event schedule for November 28th and 29th 2013, Addis Ababa.

ITRealms also recalls that in January 2012, at the 18th African Union (AU) Summit, themed Boosting Intra-Africa Trade agreed on fast-tracking the establishment of a Continental Free Trade Area (C-FTA) by 2017, even as it was recommended by the African Union Ministers of Trade meeting held in December 2011 that PACCI holds.

Between the AU Ministers of Trade at their 2010 meeting, tasking the African Union Commission (AUC), with assistance from the United Nation Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) and the African Development Bank (AfDB), to undertake preparatory work that would support their proposal of a Continental FTA, three key papers on boosting intra-African trade was developed on “Issue paper on Boosting Intra-Africa Trade”, “Action Plan for Boosting Intra African Trade” and “Draft Framework, Roadmap and Architecture for Fast Tracking the C-FTA.”

The AU Trade Ministers officially endorsed these papers at their December 2011 Meeting.

The papers set out a plan to boost trade by at least 25-30% in the next 10 years and to establish the C-FTA by 2017.

The C-FTA will eliminate tariffs on substantially all originating trade between C-FTA member states. Along with measures to further reduce the cost of cross-border trade, it will not only help to increase intra-African trade, but also to improve Africa’s competitiveness in the global marketplace. Ministers have agreed to a number of provisions set out in the Draft Framework, Roadmap and Architecture for Fast Tracking the C-FTA.

The Pan African Chamber of Commerce and Industry is working with the African Trade Policy Center (ATPC) of the UNECA, the AUC, and other partners; National and Regional Chambers of Commerce (RCC), Regional Economic Communities (RECs), Business Councils among others, to strengthen Africa’s capacity to advance the community’s economic well-being, and the general welfare and prosperity of African businesses.

This conference is being organized in Addis Ababa to consult a range of African business stakeholders on the role business can play in building domestic political support for the Continental Free Trade Area (C-FTA).
