The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), has adduced some reasons on why it approved the 50 per cent is telecom services tariff in the country, reports ITREALMS.

NCC also said that the steps were in pursuant to its power under Section 108 of the Nigerian Communications Act, 2003 (NCA) to regulate and approve tariff rates and charges by telecommunications operators.

The President, Federal Republic of Nigeria, General Muhammadu Buhari, retired, has confirmed the appointment of Deputy Corps Marshal Dauda Ali Biu, as Corps Marshal, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), reports ITREALMS.

Confirming this to ITREALMS, the Assistant Corps Marshal, Corps Public Education Officer, FRSC Headquarters, Abuja, Mr Bisi Kazeem, said that until this appointment, Dauda Ali Biu was the Acting Corps Marshal of the Commission, a position he held since July, 2022.

Type approved equipment for consumer safety says NCC - ITREALMS

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has stressed the importance of type approved telecoms equipment, saying is for the safety of users and acceptable quality of service, reports ITREALMS.

Speaking at the second meeting of Type Approval Industry Working Group (TAIWG) in Lagos, Thursday, NCC through the Head of Technical Standards and Network Integrity, Engineer Bako Wakil, assured stakeholders of their safety as far as the working group and the Commission are concerned.

Wakil who made a presentation on “Implementing Voice over LTE Complaint Devices in Nigeria Telecommunications Ecosystem" said the meeting was part of the mandate provided for by the Nigerian Communications Act 2003 (NCA 2003) to ensure type approval of telecoms equipment.

“The Type Approval Working Group meeting was setup in September 2018 to educate and deliberate with relevant stakeholders in the industry on the importance of Type Approval on all Telecom equipment and how it impacts Quality of Service and health of users,” he said.

He also stated that NCC usually silent on types of technologies that licensees deploy to provide their services to consumers once there are no negative socio-economic impacts, and called on them to regularize their services.

Pointing out that Long Time Evolution (LTE) for instance, is a technology just like other technologies and there are challenges in LTE device market.

Some of these, he listed to include “Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) Repair centres and clear warranty agreements; Assessment of Mobile Device impact on IoS and WoE; Multiband LTE devices are usually more expensive; and there are many multi frequency bands for LTE Devices in the world when compared to 2G and 3G devices.”

The Working Group Meeting was well attended by representatives of Equipment Manufacturers, Vendors, Network Operators and Type Approval Consultants.

Approved! DBI Kano to run as Innovation Enterprise School

The Kano campus of the Digital Bridge Institute (DBI), Kano State has been approval to operate as an Innovation Enterprise Institution, reports ITRealms.

DBI, ITRealms recalls is a specialized institution committed to the creation of a knowledge-based information society in Nigeria through human capacity building in Telecommunication and Information & Communication Technology established by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) in 2004 with its main campus in Abuja, with additional five outreach campuses across the nation.

Confirming this to ITRealms, Director, Public Affairs, NCC, Mr. Tony Ojobo, noted that the approval was conveyed to DBI by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) recently.

He also said that the letter conveying the approval and signed by Executive Secretary, NBTE, Dr. M.A Kazaure on behalf of the Minister of Education Mallam Adamu Adamu informed DBI Kano should operate as Innovation Enterprise Institution with effect from May 3, 2016.

According to the letter, the Enterprise Institution should run the following programmes:

National Innovation Diploma (NID) for Telecommunication Technology, Multimedia Technology, Networking and system Security, Computer Software Engineering and Computer Hardware Engineering among others.

“The approval, “according to NBTE”, is subject to the institutions strict compliance with the Federal Government’s terms and conditions governing the operations of Innovation Enterprise Institutions”.

Part of the terms contained in the letter is that “the approval is subject to DBI admitting not more than one stream of 30 students for each of the programmes”.

Admission of the students into the approved programmes should commence from 2016/2017 session, it added.

The approval from the NBTE followed a visitation jointly carried out by the Federal Ministry of Education and the National Board for Technical Education.

A visible excited Director, of DBI, Dr. Ike Adinde said this approval is in the right direction, pointing out that with this development DBI now has regional centres in Lagos, Kano, Enugu, (Enugu State), Yola (Adamawa State), Asaba, (Delta State).

The institution’s facilities include fully equipped training rooms, multimedia teaching aids, video conference facilities among others.
