33th Sunday in Ordinary Time (November 15/20)
Your Daily BlessingMay the Lord show us His mercy! Amen.

Narration: MUSTARD SEED- Read: Prov 31:10-13.19-20.30-31; 1 Thess 5:1-6; Matt 25:14-30

McCarthy told how an elderly priest who attended a school reunion found himself amidst his former students. They freely told him of their successes as reputable architects, authors, professors, engineers, doctors, lawyers, chief executive officers, among others. Not a single failure or loser was there.
After congratulating them on their successes and achievements, he then said, “now, tell me what you have made of yourselves?” There was dead silence. They bent their heads, because, though they pride themselves of being “successful” in their professions, their inner life is a sorry sight to see.

Most of them have sacrificed their inner life (family relationships, honesty, kindness, justice and fairness, faithfulness to spouses) on the altar of material success.

Don’t confuse the “talent” in today’s Gospel merely with material success. It has layers of meanings.

Firstly, it is about the “graces” God gives us to bear fruits of virtues so as to lead holy and righteous lives.

St. Gregory even says that “to hide one’s talent is to devote the ability we have received to worldly business.”

Secondly, the “talent” means, knowledge and understanding of eternal realities and educating others in it is the “profit”.

There are more meanings but the least is the use of our “abilities” for worldly gain, despite their value!

For, “what shall it profit a man to gain the whole world and lose his soul?”

So, am I like those students? They actually hid their talents, despite their successes! Is that what you too are doing?

May the Lord show us his Mercy! Amen
