ICT Hall of Fame: Ndukwe unveils success strategies @ NCC

The outgoing Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Dr. Ernest Ndukwe, has leaked his success strategies during his 10 years reign as NCC’s frontline officer.

ITRealms Online recalls that Ndukwe was appointed the chief executive officer of the commission in 2000 by the Olusegun Obasanjo’s government for a five-year tenure and was re-appointed in 2005 for the second term which is due to end on April 3, 2010.

Speaking at a special induction into the Nigeria Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Hall of Fame, organized by the Joint Action Committee on ICT Awareness and Development (JACITAD), last Saturday in Lagos, Ndukwe said that major strength of his administration throughout his stay at NCC as the chief executive officer, was the ability to consult widely.

According to him, it is a good attribute of any successful person and would be a good incentive for anybody to take over in the future.

“It’s something I would recommend to whoever would take over,” he declared.

Ndukwe who spoke at the event presided over by chairman of Zinox Group, Dr. Leo-Stan Ekeh, said that above all, whatever one may have achieved on earth must not be turned to a boastful instrument.

“Having a privileged position is a mere privilege from God,” he asserted, stressing that good things of life are good and could be only enjoyed when they are earned honestly.

Ndukwe pointed out that before ever venturing into NCC, he was not looking for money, because he was not really un-employed, but saw it as an opportunity and a call to serve.

“I didn’t go into NCC looking for money. I wasn’t really un-employed, but when the call came I thought it was time to have a chance to serve,” he said, stressing that the past 10 years have been very rewarding to him as a person and the nation.

He, therefore, expressed gratitude to God for using him to make an impact on the lives of Nigerians and commended the nation’s ICT media practitioners for standing on the path of truth throughout the controversy over the aborted sale of 2.3 Gega Hertz spectrum, last year.

Ndukwe equally expressed delight that the presidency intervened and NCC is already on the path of reselling the spectrum as directed, just as he gave kudos to the majority of Nigerian ICT media for understanding the subject matter so well to be on the path of truth.

“You guys fought for the truth during the 2.3 GHz issue. I am glad that most of our journalists came out and decided to be on the side of truth,” he declared.

On what he would like to do immediately after his disengagement at NCC next month, Ndukwe disclosed that he may set up a non-governmental organization that would focus on capacity building of Nigerian youths within ICT sector, hence he would continue to be actively involved in the industry.

In his comment, Dr. Ekeh who presided over the occasion, said Ndukwe has delivered on his assignment, which is not in dispute and called for a law to allow JACITAD to host the only industry recognition platform, even as he applauded JACITAD for the initiative.

President, Nigeria Internet Group (NIG), Mr. Lanre Ajayi noted that one thing about Ndukwe was that he never attributed his success to himself, rather he made bold to say always that the deregulation was spurred by democratic environment and good regulation.

The irony of the foundation he laid, Ajayi said, is that when the result comes in the near future, Ndukwe himself, may not be in office.

National President, Association of Telecom Companies of Nigeria (ATCON), Dr. Emmanuel Ekuwem, said he was proud of JACITAD for the initiative, pointing out that ATCON is ready to welcome Ndukwe back home, who was ATCON’s former president before his appointment to NCC.

For the President, Institute of Software Practitioners of Nigeria (ISPON), Mr. Chris Uwaje, Ndukwe is a special specie that understands the way Nigeria works and advised JACITAD to institute an Ndukwe Foundation and work towards ensuring that the right person replaces him come April 3, this year.

Chief executive of e-Business Life Communications, Mrs. Ufuoma Daro said that it took a good upbringing to raise the kind of person as Ernest Ndukwe and urged Nigerian families to pay attention to family values in order to ensure that tomorrow leaders are well groomed.

Earlier, JACITAD President, Mr. Prince Osuagwu, said the choice of Ndukwe for the maiden award is without question, thus, he deserved more than he is being given today.

Osuagwu also thanked him for ensuring that ICT media practitioners benefited from the human capacity building efforts at NCC, just as Ndukwe stands out for his ability to accommodate criticisms.
