It’s a spam – Ericsson

Market Intelligence:
Telecommunications equipment giant, Ericsson has warned that it is not having any promotion of any sort with a promise to give away laptops or mobile phones.

Reacting to the recent spam mail currently being circulated on the Internet, Ericsson Media Relations team informed Champion Infotel that what is going on presently is ‘Spam’.

Defined as unsolicited mails usually circulated on the Internet via electronic mail (e-mail) distribution, spam mails have continued to be of concern to the stakeholders, especially the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

It would be recalled that current spam mail reads:

“Hi everyone,
“The Ericsson Company is distributing free computer Lap-tops in an attempt to match Nokia that has already done so. Ericsson hopes to increase its popularity this way. For this reason, they are giving away the new WAP laptops. All you need to do to qualify is to send this mail to 8 people you know. Within 2 weeks, you will receive EricssonT18. But if you can send it to 20 people or more, you will receive Ericsson R320.

“Make sure to send a copy to: anna.swelung@ericsson.com.”

But responding to our inquiries, Ericsson Media team in its headquarters, said that what people are receiving is spam mail.

“What you received was a SPAM. A chain letter is currently in circulation via e-mail, claiming that Ericsson is giving away Laptop PCs/mobile phones,” the team said.

According to the team, the e-mail is a fraud and Ericsson is not giving away Laptop PCs or phones for free.

Ericsson also disclaimed Anna Swelung, who purportedly originated the letter and said that such a person does not exist at Ericsson.

“The letter is signed off by Anna Swelung. This person does not exist at Ericsson,” the media experts at Ericsson informed.

Ericsson also said, the legal and Information Technology (IT) departments at Ericsson are aware of the issue with illegal chain letter.

While expressing displeasure over any inconvenience this (letter) may have caused, Ericsson asked people not to forward the chain mail further.

Another noteworthy factor here is that both Ericsson T18 and R320 mobile phones have since been stopped in the line of production according to company sources. So it is no longer available in the market, let alone being giving out.
