Nigeria’s tax goals: Automation driven small businesses can help

To drive higher levels of payroll and accounting automation among businesses, especially small, micro and medium-sized enterprises, would help Nigeria to achieve its tax goals, says the Regional Director for Sage West Africa, Mr. Magnus Nmonwu, reports ITRealms.

Reacting to the recent comments accredited to International Monetary Fund (IMF) which warned that Nigerian governments’ ability to effectively finance infrastructure and services is constrained by low tax collection, said that despite recent tax reforms by the Federal Government, Nigeria needs to grow tax revenue by registering more tax payers and enhancing collections and compliance.

Initiatives such as the government’s Voluntary Assets and Income Declaration Scheme (VAIDS) - hich gives taxpayers an opportunity to voluntarily declare all previously undisclosed assets and income are steps in the right direction, he adds. Higher levels of automation and modernisation among tax authorities as well as increased use of digital filing and payment are also positive developments.

“Another way Nigeria’s Federal and State Governments could enhance compliance is by encouraging businesses of all sizes to use technology to streamline capturing of transactions and automate payroll calculations. These solutions can help minimize the risk of non-payment of tax or incorrect remittances of taxes to the relevant government agencies,” he said, stressing that the ability to generate financial statements, tax certificates, reports and electronic payslips with the click of a button is a major timesaver.
“An automated, cloud-based solution also means that businesses have an audit trail and reliable backups for all of their financial transactions, so that they can demonstrate their compliance with tax laws,” he said.

Such software, he said, could help address some of the complexity Nigerian businesses face in paying tax, as Nigeria aims to move from its current position of 181 out of 189 countries to top 50 on the Ease of Paying Taxes World Report, which means that we will see a lot of reform of the tax system in the years to come.

Corporate governance key to SMEs growth

ITRealms

Stakeholders have agreed that absence of corporate governance is the major hindrance to growth of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Nigeria, reports ITRealms.

They said that structure is a fundamental element of corporate governance that could catapult start-ups to the next level of business ladder wherein they would be able to attract funding as banks and equity investors are looking for scalable businesses that could guarantee return on investment.

The Chief Executive Officer, W-HBS Limited, a ManagementConsultancy firm that represents organizations prominently in financial matters, LanreOniyitan, addressing a gathering of start-ups, Thursday, at the quarterly SME Capacity Development Forum organized by the Republic Media Limited in Lagos, decried inability of start-ups which include kitchen and cottage businesses to build structures that would serve as roadmap for their businesses.

ITRealms gathered she told the audience that structure must include differentiating the business from the owner, having bank account that bears the business name, business process/manual/systems that define duties and keeps business going even in the absence of the owner, growth plan, predictability of where the company will be in next 10 years.

She said it is wrong to go to commercial banks for funding as start-ups because they have not built enough structure. Banks, she said, are looking for companies that can guarantee return on investment, saying that start-ups should organize themselves into cooperatives to be able to attract fund especially from Bank of Industry which could lend as much as half a billion Naira of SMEs.

She stressed that for a company to access the fund it must be able to affect farmers and the youth, adding that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN)guarantees its SME to the tune of 50 per cent and expect the company to collaterize the rest 50 per cent.

As part of the Corporate Governance, she told ITRealms that payroll must be consistent as investors and lenders are equally after such details. She also said that in such fund one must not ask for too much or too little, stressing that one must engage a professional financial consultant to be able to package the vision of the start-up to be able to access fund.

Speaking on Alternative Security Market, Mohammed A. Mohammed , representing Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) said the bane of SME include lack of corporate governance, poor management , absence of visibility study, inexistent accounting system, lack of business and succession plans.Other sources of hindrance to SME growth are inconsistent government policy, lack of basic infrastructure, security and accessing funds at cutthroat rates.

He also spoke on the criteria for listing in the stock exchange and guide to alternative finance which include approaching a Growth Ambassador who would tell potential canditates that it is achievable, institutional service providers, structuring the business into departments, staff structure, and a turnover that is up to N50 million a year.

A representative of AIICO Insurance, OlusolaAjayi stressed the importance of insurance even as he advised start-ups to take up certain covers like fire and burglary, good life, children education, pension for corporate risk management just as the Managing Director, TFS Finance Limited, Mr. Eddie Osarenkoe, addressed the issue of strategy in business.

The convener of the Forum and Managing Director, The Republic Media Limited, Mr. Monday Ashibogwu, told participants at the event with the theme “Tackling Challenges with Emerging Opportunities” explored potentials in Small Business Funding, and advised SMEs to buildfinancial inclusive business to be able to attract funding.

SME: Okere prescribes 3 Powers for Success as entrepreneurs

FOUNDER and Chief Executive Officer, Computer Warehouse Group Plc, Mr. Austin Okere has prescribed three antidotes owners of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) must abide with to become successful, reports DigitalSENSE Business News.

The three antidotes are what he tagged “3 Powers of success” which include the Way power, the Will power and the Wait power.

Okere who gave this insight at the maiden edition of the Annual Fidelity SMEs conference in Lagos as a panelist on the theme “Leveraging Technology for SME Growth”, noted that the three powers are secrets that will keep every entrepreneur going.

The panel featured outstanding entrepreneurs in the ICT sector of the country, including Chief Leo Stan Ekeh, the Founder of Zinox Technologies; Mr. Nicolas Martin, CEO and Co- Founder of Jumia , Mr. Charles Anudu, CEO, Swift Networks, Mr. Bankole Cardoso, Founder Easy Taxi, Mr. Opeyemi Awoyemi, Co-Founder Jobberman and Mrs. Funke Opeke, CEO of Main One.

“Will power is the competence you possess to run your business. The knowledge of how to run the enterprise you want to venture into,” he said.

Many people, he noted, will start a business, create solutions then go about looking for the problems. And when sales are not made they become disappointed.

“You first ought to be finding out peoples’ problems and pain points then create solutions that ameliorate the pain. This is the best way to ensure patronage,” Okere advised.

The will power, Okere said is “the resolve to keep going when everyone say give up”. “Sometimes people close to you will advise you to dump your venture and seek a proper job. But, what should keep you going at such times is your passion. It is the passion of a footballer that makes him complain when he is benched, despite the fact that he will still receive his pay at the end of the day. Your will power makes you go the extra mile, while your passion makes you persist in your venture while waiting for pay day.”

“Most businesses fail because the proprietors abandon them as soon as they face challenges, because it is not yielding as much as they want. After you have put so much effort into your business, you need to patiently wait for the benefits that will accrue from it. This is the essence of the third power; the wait power, which takes you eventually to light at the end of a dark tunnel,” he concluded.
On how SMEs could leverage on technology to maximize results, Okere advised merchants to explore the opportunities that the CWG 2.0 platform offers.

“SMERP and Openshopen platforms are designed to meet the peculiar needs of SMEs in Nigeria. Openshopen will give you the visibility your business requires to thrive in this age where businesses are going online, while SMERP will take care of your accounting and generate the records banks like Fidelity will require from you to access loans. Beyond that, they are reliable and affordable, and are available on a subscription basis,” he said.

Okere emphasized on the essence of developing the CWG2.0 platform to democratize the technology that companies such as Jumia and Konga have erstwhile used exclusively to great advantage, and make them available to the over 17.7m MSMEs in Nigeria.

“Seeing the value that this platform shall bring to the SME’s in the country, SMEDAN recently signed an MOU with CWG Plc culminating in a partnership that will address the technology needs of the sector.” Austin asserted.

The Managing Director, Fidelity Bank Plc, Mr. Nnamdi Okonkwo, in his opening speech maintained that the bank’s commitment to building Nigerian entrepreneurs is one of its core business focuses.

“We have gathered here today to deliberate on the challenges faced by SMEs in Nigeria and proffer solutions that would guide entrepreneurs to build sustainable businesses,” he explained.

“Our goal is to produce more successful businessmen like Alhaji Aliko Dangote from our entrepreneurs that are in SME category for now. We have watched Dangote transform from a merchant who went into manufacturing and later transformed into an owner of a multinational conglomerate,” he said.

Earlier, Mr. Okere was given a Distinguished Partner Award for his role in the building of Nigerian entrepreneurs by Fidelity Bank plc.

In a commemorative statement, the bank appreciated Mr. Okere for sharing his ideas on the panel.

“We have continued to receive excellent feedbacks from the audience who are inspired by the insights and knowledge you shared.” he explained.
