SkyVision launches VSAT hub in South Africa
Acclaimed leader in global provider of Internet
Protocol (IP) connectivity over satellite and fibre optic networks throughout
Africa, SkyVision Global Networks Ltd, has launched its new iDirect Very Small
Aperture Terminal (VSAT) hub service for South Africa.
Marketing Communications Manager, SkyVision
Global Networks, Iris Tovim, stated in a press statement that this offering would
be operated by SkyVision Networks South Africa (Pty) Ltd., SkyVision Global
Network’s local subsidiary.
Toyim also said, the establishment of
SkyVision Networks South Africa and the teleport and local VSAT hub it operates
is the latest strategic move SkyVision has taken in order to expand its African
footprint.
This offering, the company said will enable
it respond to Africa's need for high quality communication services over fibre,
wireless and satellite.
The new iDirect Hub in Johannesburg, Toyim
further said, supports the latest iDX 3.1 iDirect release, and takes full
advantage of the Amos 5 satellite with its coverage of southern and sub-Saharan
Africa.
“This will allow SkyVision to offer cost
effective and highly reliable VSAT services for South African companies and
organizations,” Toyim said, stressing that SkyVision offers a range of VSAT
satellite routers, including the latest iDirect X1, data rates and services in

SkyVision gets new POP in Abuja
Leading global provider of Internet
Protocol (IP) connectivity over satellite and fibre optic systems, SkyVision
Global Networks Limited has advanced its services with the establishment of new
Point-of-Presence (PoP) facility in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The SkyVision’s existing PoP in Lagos
and new PoP in Abuja are connected to the company’s global MPLS backbone
network which enables its customers’ direct access to the international
internet backbone.
SkyVision Sales Director for West
Africa, Mr. Eitan Mesika, said this has been made possible through SkyVision’s
broad network as well as connectivity from anywhere in the world to Nigeria
using multiple submarine cables.
“Providing
unlimited, high-quality internet access services through our PoP in Abuja
directly to the customer premises dramatically improves the customer experience
and places SkyVision as a true end-to-end solution provider,” he said.
The
new PoP in Abuja, he said, would also allow organizations to benefit from
SkyVision’s Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT) hub in Lagos, which provides
satellite-based virtual private network services, connecting corporate
headquarters to sites that are not covered by any reliable fiber or microwave
service.
The company's fibre-based services, he
said, include SkyVision Internet Access, SkyVision IP-Virtual Private Network (VPN)
and Carrier Ethernet services.
Also,
he noted that SkyVision offers its Internet and VPN customers in Nigeria,
comprehensive Managed Firewall Services which include Managed Services and
Self-Service layers to enable SkyVision customers with options including
firewall, traffic shaping, SSL VPN and Unified Threat Management (UTM) by web
content filtering and application control and integrated intrusion prevention
including antivirus and spyware.

further pointed out that these services provide excellent benefits to enterprise
customers as they improve productivity and provide network security without the
need to invest in installing and managing dedicated equipment for their

VSAT remains cheapest accessible technology – Makau
The Head, Customer Services at the iWay Africa office in Kenya, Mr. Tom Makau has said that the Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT) remains the cheapest access to internet technology.
This came as iWay Africa unveiled its FiberSAT in Lagos.
Speaking at the Information Access and Collaboration conference organised by iWayAfrica Nigeria Ltd in partnership with NetApp, in Lagos, Mr. Makau said that VSAT still offers unrivaled reliability over any other access technologies.
“No technology offers higher uptime than VSAT,” he asserted, stressing that even in the most wired markets, VSAT’s offer better value proposition to security minded organizations.
“VSAT offers the only remaining true private networks,” he declared.
He said that despite cheap terrestrial connectivity in the United States (US) and European Union (EU), VSAT is still popular in these regions.
Makau pointed out that why the likes of Camelot and United States Postal Service (USPS) still use VSAT, was due to its advantages, noting that HughesNet VSAT customer distribution in North America, indicated that Hughes has over 800,000 VSAT sites in USA, mainly in the urban areas, attributing it to the fact that VSAT offers reliability and value for money.
This, he said, has demystified the myth that VSAT is an access method for only the rural areas.
Equally, Makau, who spoke on ‘VSAT is dead?” said that what would make broadband affordable, depends entirely on pricing, which has remained relatively high in Africa due to high Capital Expenditures (CAPEX) and Operating Expenditure (OPEX) based on infrastructure on the continent.
Some Internet Service Providers (ISPs), he noted, have tried to emulate US and EU pricing without considering some historical facts, which resulted in their offering poor services as they struggle to stay afloat.
For African ISPs to offer lower prices without compromising service quality, three things must happen, these, he listed to include that Africa must develop and host local content locally and applications, citing the likes of NetApp and Telkom’s cybernest as some of the data centres available to the continent.
The second outline, he said, is that the market must provide critical numbers needed to take advantage of economies of scale, stressing that currently Africa is scored 5.4 per cent out of the 23 percentage drawn from the global penetration rates.
Lastly, he said, that regulatory environment needs to be fair to operators and cited another instance with the cost of Third Generation (3G) license in Kenya, which cost about $20 million, while in Finland it is free.
He further pointed out that the African Internet market is unique because of largely absence of electricity power supply at various countries across the continent, insisting that unless this situation changes, penetration would remain poor.
In addition, he said that internet contents are hosted everywhere else apart from Africa.
For him, VSAT advantages include that it offers ubiquitous, instant coverage over large
geographical areas with uniform service deployment.
“VSAT offers faster deployment than other business quality technologies,” he said, even as it is more cost effective than terrestrial systems as its bundled with bandwidth and lower total cost of ownership to name a few.
Part of VSAT, Makau said, is that it’s a fully managed, single point of contact network technology; rarely do VSAT have third party involvement, while it offers broadcast capability such as digital signage and educational programmes.
“VSATs are generally more reliable than terrestrial lines, hence it has higher uptime and less points of failure with faster recovery,” Makau submitted.
Also speaking on the latest brand launch by iWay Africa, which is now a subsidiary of Telkom Group, the General Manager, iWay Africa Nigeria Limited, Mr. John Ugbe, said noted that the firm started operations in Nigeria in 2003 as MWEB Nigeria.
“MWEB acquired iWayAfrica in 2008 and the Nigeria operations were merged in iWayAfrica Nigeria Limited,” he said, with presence in over 30 African countries.
iWay Africa, he said, is the largest VSAT broadband provider in Africa which is deployed as Comsys, thus providing services to over 60,000 corporate subscribers, VSAT availability nationwide as well as six channel partners and staff in major cities.

Anambra receives 110 VSAT, others from Galaxy
GALAXY Backbone (GB) Plc has delivered 110 Very Small Aperture Terminals (VSAT) to the Anambra State government, just as it has commenced deployment of access to some selected schools in the State.
This came as the agreement was recently signed with the State governor, Mr. Peter Obi.
Sources close to the Abuja-based Galaxy Backbone, informed ITRealms Online that the leading public sector Information and Communication Technology (ICT) infrastructure, has within five working days after the deal was signed mobilized all the equipment and requisite manpower to Awka, the state capital.
ITRealms Online recalled that the deal was to deploy internet connectivity and access to 110 secondary schools in the State.
Confirming this, the Corporate Executive, States, Education & Developmental Services, at Galaxy Backbone, Mr. Yusuf Kazaure, said during the official handover and public presentation of Anambra State School Connectivity Programme to the people of the state by Gov. Obi, said the company was proud to be associated with Anambra State Government under Peter Obi in its desire and passion to empower future generations of Anambrarians.
He also said that with the capacity to actualize their full potentials as global citizens in a globalized world, hence the decision to mobilized all the hardware and software, including human resources for the immediate deployment to priority sites.
“For the avoidance of doubt, the contract was signed a fortnight ago and equipment for the 110 secondary schools arrived on last Saturday,” he said, stressing that these equipment have been handed over to the State Commissioner of Education, Dr. Mrs. Kay Onyechi.
“… Our technical team is on standby to connect the first ten priority sites with five working days as soon as our site readiness criteria are met,” he assured.
Kazaure who also made presentation at the occasion, said Anambra State Government was the first State Government in Nigeria to contract over hundred educational sites.
“This is the beginning of a new era for students and teachers in Anambra State. They will enjoy internet services at a faster speed on a secured network. This will definitely create opportunity for them which they will explore for the benefit of this state,” he said.

Gilat Satcom maintains 3,000 VSAT sites – Schapiro
Global satellite solutions provider, Gilat Satcom Limited, has over 3,000 Very Small Aperture Terminals in over 40 countries to its credit, says the Vice President, Sales for Africa, Mr. Daniel Schapiro, reports CHARLES OKOH.
Speaking to Champion Infotel, at the just concluded West African International Telecommunications and Information Communications Technology Exhibition (W.Afri.Tel) 2009, which held in Lagos, last week, Mr. Schapiro, said the company is determined to increase its presence in VSAT products, based on price affordability, which Gilat is conscious about.
According to him, the company delivers a full range of voice, data and internet telecommunications services using VSAT, fiber optic and a variety of other fixed and mobile technologies.
Mr. Schapiro also said Gilat provides broadband internet connectivity, mobile satellite services, VSAT private networks, wholesale Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services and data storage and disaster recovery.
“We maintain over 3,000 VSAT sites and hundreds of portable modems and handsets, providing broadband internet and other voice and data services for leading organizations, such as telcos, cellular operators and Internet Service Providers (ISPs), cyber cafes, oil and gas companies, universities and education service providers, financial and insurance corporations, military and security services, mining and energy conglomerates among others,” he said.
He further said, that the Israeli firm, founded in 1992 is licensed to deliver data services to its customers and has since year 2000, introduced broadband Internet services.
“Since that time, this product line has become a primary growth engine for the group which has in excess of 3,000 terminals in more than 40 countries,” he said.
In addition, he said, the company two years later acquired by Satcom Systems Ltd. whose shares are traded on the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange, paving the way for it to commenced the supply of international VoIP voice services.

Niger State teams up with Galaxy Plc on NICEP
In line with the commitment of the Niger State government, the executive governor, Dr. Babangida Aliyu has endorsed a teaming up of the state with the federal government infrastructure backbone company, the Galaxy Backbone (GBB) Plc through the National Information, Communication and Education Programme (NICEP) projects.
NICEP is an Information and Communication Technology (ICT) policy intervention by the Federal Government targeted at the realization of its e-governance and Millennium Development Goals’ objectives.
Equally NICEP project is designed to deploy about 5000 Very Small Aperture Terminals (VSAT) nodes all around the country including Federal Government Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDA), the 36 state capitals and 774 local government areas.
The NICEP project promises to provide the benefits of ICT to all areas of the country, particularly hard-to-reach areas and underserved communities, connected directly to the NICEP national operations centre in Abuja.
Corporate Communications, Manager at Galaxy Backbone Plc, Mr. Franklyn Ginger-Eke, said in a press statement made available to ITRealms Online that the partnership would centre on the vision to make Niger State one of the three best economies in Nigeria, especially in the areas of education, science and technology as well as agriculture by 2020.
Commenting, Gov. Aliyu expressed willingness to partner with Galaxy Backbone Plc towards the achievement of the socio-economic development of the state.
Speaking through the State Commissioner for Science & Technology, Alhaji Muhammad Yusuf Gunu, during a courtesy visit to Galaxy Plc in Abuja, said that the Niger State Government would form a credible partnership with GBB on the NICEP based on its belief that the adoption of ICTs and its benefits is the only way the state could remain relevant and a key player in support of the national efforts of making Nigeria one of the 20 top economies in the world by 2020.
According to him, the partnership is part of the overall vision of becoming an e-compliant society by leveraging opportunities represented in the 5,000 VSAT-nodes NICEP Project currently being rolled out nationwide by Galaxy.
Welcoming the guest, Managing Director, Galaxy Backbone Plc, Mr. Gerald Ilukwe, said that the visit is a confirmation that the Dr. Aliyu’s administration is a government that matches words with deeds.
He recalled that Aliyu as the Special Guest of Honour at the 1st Public Sector ICT Infrastructure Forum organized by Galaxy Backbone Plc recently was represented by the Permanent Secretary, State Ministry of Science & Technology and had pledged that the resolutions of the forum would form a major platform for the implementation of the ICT policy initiatives of the state government.
Ilukwe also said that Galaxy Backbone’s business objectives are focused in four main areas namely Technology 4 Governance which deals with Government to Government interactions at the federal or state levels; Technology 4 Revenue which concerns using ICTs for revenue generation, payment of taxes, budget performance monitoring, reliable statistics for planning and so on; Technology 4 Education which involves delivering qualitative education especially at Tertiary and Secondary levels and Technology 4 Development which focuses on community development.

Corporate Communications, Manager at Galaxy Backbone Plc, Mr. Franklyn Ginger-Eke, said in a press statement made available to ITRealms Online that the partnership would centre on the vision to make Niger State one of the three best economies in Nigeria, especially in the areas of education, science and technology as well as agriculture by 2020.
Commenting, Gov. Aliyu expressed willingness to partner with Galaxy Backbone Plc towards the achievement of the socio-economic development of the state.
Speaking through the State Commissioner for Science & Technology, Alhaji Muhammad Yusuf Gunu, during a courtesy visit to Galaxy Plc in Abuja, said that the Niger State Government would form a credible partnership with GBB on the NICEP based on its belief that the adoption of ICTs and its benefits is the only way the state could remain relevant and a key player in support of the national efforts of making Nigeria one of the 20 top economies in the world by 2020.
According to him, the partnership is part of the overall vision of becoming an e-compliant society by leveraging opportunities represented in the 5,000 VSAT-nodes NICEP Project currently being rolled out nationwide by Galaxy.
Welcoming the guest, Managing Director, Galaxy Backbone Plc, Mr. Gerald Ilukwe, said that the visit is a confirmation that the Dr. Aliyu’s administration is a government that matches words with deeds.
He recalled that Aliyu as the Special Guest of Honour at the 1st Public Sector ICT Infrastructure Forum organized by Galaxy Backbone Plc recently was represented by the Permanent Secretary, State Ministry of Science & Technology and had pledged that the resolutions of the forum would form a major platform for the implementation of the ICT policy initiatives of the state government.
Ilukwe also said that Galaxy Backbone’s business objectives are focused in four main areas namely Technology 4 Governance which deals with Government to Government interactions at the federal or state levels; Technology 4 Revenue which concerns using ICTs for revenue generation, payment of taxes, budget performance monitoring, reliable statistics for planning and so on; Technology 4 Education which involves delivering qualitative education especially at Tertiary and Secondary levels and Technology 4 Development which focuses on community development.
He pledged his company’s readiness to work with the government of Niger State for the attainment of the socio-economic development of the state and its people.
