Anambra State has reaffirmed its dominance in Nigeria’s education sector, clinching nine major honours at the 2025 President’s Teachers and Schools Excellence Awards held on Sunday in Abuja.

Leading the pack, Woliwo Primary School II, Onitsha, emerged as the Overall Best School in Nigeria, a feat that underscores the state’s tradition of academic excellence and innovation. The remarkable outing also saw Pinkberry International School, Odume, Obosi, named First Runner-up for Best Approved Private School, while Emmanuel Ndibe of St. Theresa’s Secondary School, Enugwu Ukwu, received recognition as First Runner-up in the Approved Private Senior Secondary School category.

In the teaching category, Nkechi Ikedi of Pinkberry International Primary School, Odume, Obosi, was honoured as First Runner-up for Best Approved Private Primary School Teacher, just as Cosmas Nwata of Igbariam Farm Settlement Primary School received the First Runner-up award for Best Public Primary School Teacher in Nigeria.

Anambra’s public institutions equally excelled. Girls’ Secondary School, Ojoto, was named First Runner-up for Best Public Junior Secondary School, while Amaka Ubaka of Prince Memorial Secondary School, Onitsha, took home the First Runner-up award for Best Public Senior Secondary School Administrator. In addition, Ngozi Okafor of Community High School, Nkwelle Ezunaka, won the First Runner-up award for Best Public Junior Secondary School Administrator, and Nnenna Edozieobi of Model Primary School, Akabor, Ojoto, earned the First Runner-up award for Best Public Primary School Administrator in Nigeria.

Education observers have described the achievement as a direct reflection of Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo’s bold and sustained investment in education. The 2025 Anambra State budget allocated an unprecedented 101 percent increase in sectoral spending to education—the highest in the state’s history—demonstrating the administration’s resolve to strengthen human capital development through quality learning.

The Soludo administration’s reforms, which prioritise teacher training, school infrastructure, digital learning, and curriculum innovation, are now yielding visible results. State officials noted that the multiple awards were a testament to Anambra’s holistic approach to education and its commitment to producing globally competitive learners.

According to the Ministry of Education, the awards mirror “the government’s vision to make education the foundation of human capital development and socio-economic transformation.”

Governor Soludo, who has repeatedly stated that “education remains the cornerstone of our development agenda,” expressed pride in the achievements, describing them as evidence that “strategic investment in people always pays off.”

With these nine national honours, Anambra once again cements its reputation as a beacon of excellence in Nigeria’s educational landscape and a model for other states to emulate.
