Nigeria ready to host ICANN-2013 meeting – NIRA president

The president of the Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NIRA) Mrs. Mary Uduma has reiterated the nation’s interest in hosting the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) public meeting in 2013.

Mrs. Uduma made this disclosure on return from the 40th public meeting of ICANN where she represented Nigeria at the Government Advisory Committee (GAC) of ICANN with other Five-man delegation of the Executive Board of Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA) who at the meeting held in San Francisco, California, United States.

According to her, the ICANN has requested proposals from the countries that are interested in hosting ICANN meeting in 2013 and Nigeria is interested in hosting the African region slot for 2013.

She noted that though Nigeria could not win the slot in 2010, but is determined to win this time around.

Mrs. Uduma revealed that a memo would be made to the stakeholders to give support to the bid before final submission to ICANN.

“The bid paper of 2010 would be updated and submitted to the ICANN for considerations,” she said.

On why NIRA participation was essential to the just concluded public meeting, she explained that NIRA is the replica of ICANN at the national level.

“Just as ICANN manages the Domain Name System (DNS) at global level, NIRA does same in Nigeria,” she declared, stressing that NIRA needed to exchange views with other country code Top Level Domain (ccTLD) operators worldwide and learn new methods of Registry operation.

She pointed out that policies that affect the DNS managements are shaped at ICANN meetings, it therefore became essential for NIRA to participate in this policy development process at the global level.

On the areas of contribution made by NIRA at the meeting, Mrs. Uduma noted that this was done by exchange of views and sharing of experience from Nigeria that affects the policy development process of the ICANN as well as creating visibility for the .ng ccTLD at that level.

NiRA’s future plan of engagement with ICANN, she said, is to continue to display constructive commitment, mostly those that would impact on the activities of NIRA and specifically on the DNS management.

She, however, decried the final verdict of ICANN board of directors on .XXX, describing it as legitimization of porn at the root of the DNS.

“The verdict did not take into consideration the moral question and sensitivity of its action. I am pained at this development,” she lamented.

NIRA’s delegation included some members of the Executive Board of Directors; Chairman Establishment Committee, Mr. Sekiru Shehu, his counterparts in Communication and Publicity as well as Accreditation, Technical Committees, Messrs Remmy Nweke and Biyi Oladipo, Muhammed Rudman respectively, in addition to the Exchequer, Mr. Abimbola Olayinka.

ITRealms Online recalls that NIRA was founded on March 23, 2005 as a stakeholder-led organisation, charged with the management and coordination of the nation’s Country Top Level Domain Name (ccTLD), dot ng.

NIRA’s establishment was the end of a long period of inactivity and dispute on the appropriate management of this national resource. While the resolution coordinated by the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), saw stakeholders within Nigeria’s Internet community participating in its formation.
