Ekweremadu leads guests to Beacon of ICT awards

Deputy Senate president, Chief Ikechukwu Ekweremadu has accepted to lead delegates as the special guest of honour to the 2011 edition of Beacon of ICT awards.

The award scheduled to hold in Lagos on Saturday, March 26 would also have a distinguished personality delivering the lecture

A letter of acceptance personally signed by the deputy senate president and dated February 14, 2011, read in parts “I wish to confirm my acceptance of your invitation/request and to thank you for the honour.”

According to the organizers, the event billed to hold at the Eko Hotels and Suite is expected to draw top leadership of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), National Copyright Commission (NCC) and National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) to name a few.

The annual industry-wide celebration, the organizers said, recognizes deserving talents, contributions and commitments to the growth of the ICT industry.

Chief host and editor-in-chief, Nigeria CommunicationsWeek, the organizers of the event, Mr. Ken Nwogbo, said that award is merit-centric celebration to honour finest and brightest companies and individuals who have helped put Nigeria on the global Information and Communication Technology (ICT) map.

He said that Senator Ekweremadu’s acceptance to be part of the event shows how the legislature values its contributions to national development.

Nwogbo also said that Ekweremadu shares the newspaper’s belief that Beacon of ICT Distinguished Lecture/Awards series would assist in putting Nigeria on the global information and communications technologies atlas.

“He is a rare politician who says what he means with absolute certainty, he symbolizes hope because his political activities are founded on commitment and responsibility towards the people” Nwogbo said.

He recalled that Ekweremadu has been a senator since May 2003 and is now deputy Senate president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Born in 1962, he said, Senator Ekweremadu, hails from Amachara Mpu in Aninri Local Government Area of Enugu State, and holds both Bachelors and Masters Degree in Law from the University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus. He was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1987.

He lives a life of service and was at one time Secretary to the Enugu State Government, Chief of Staff, Government House, Enugu State, Associates Lecturer in Law at the Enugu Campus of the University of Nigeria.

The deputy senate president was also executive chairman of the Aninri Local Government and under his watch; the local government witnessed a rapid rural transformation, a performance which stands unequalled till date.

Senator Ekweremadu has so many awards, honours and commendation including The Pride of Our Generation, from Senator Abubakar Umar Gada, Sokoto East Senatorial District on February 12, 2010.

Further, Nwogbo said Beacon of ICT awards are the first free awards designed to encourage organizations and individuals to continue to provide efficient and high-quality services to Nigerians.

The awardees are chosen by Nigerians who recognize and appreciate the guiding lights of the organizations and individuals as well as the symbols of hope they raise.

“Being the authoritative voice of ICT and how they affect lives, Nigeria CommunicationsWeek is uniquely placed to view government and business organizations as well as individuals’ contributions, creativity and excellence in the application of ICTs and solutions,” he said.
