Recession: PMG tasks employees on prudence

THE Post Master-General (PMG) of the Federation, Mallam Mori Baba, has tasked employees of EMS Speedpost, the courier arm of the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST), to respond to current challenges by being prudent and efficient in the use of infrastructure to deliver optimal service.

Speaking at EMS annual conference in Lagos, at the weekend, the PMG identified decline in export and import volumes due to prevailing global financial crisis, and fall in capital inflow into the economy with negative impact on the growth of GDP to increase in the global unemployment level.

This, he noted has lead to a sharp decline in the volume of remittances from Nigerians in diaspora to stimulate the economy as some of the threats to the flurry of activities in the courier sub sector.

Others, he said, are the challenges in the capital market and the fall in the prices of crude oil which more than anything would affect the spending capacity at all levels of the socio-economic and political strata, including government at all levels.

“The bleak business outlook, notwithstanding, I have no doubt that we have the capacity to transcend the current challenges and continue to thrive by making the customers the centre of every action we take, and every decision we make,” he advised.

To achieve this, the PMG enjoined employees of EMS on innovation in improving on existing products and development of new ones, as well as being able to deliver value promised to customers right on target.

Equally speaking, the General Manager, EMS, Mr. Osadolor Eboigbodin, said there was need for EMS to be constantly re-orientated and sensitized to welcome and delight all customers, more so stakeholders so as to improve its position, market share and fortune in an era of economic recession.

Mr. Eboigbodin called for prompt response to customers and delivery partners’ enquiries and complaints, asserting that “the obvious challenges notwithstanding, we have to constantly exploit the advantages of our large network and competitive price to constantly maintain the rating of EMS Nigeria as a major courier both in the local and global market.”

“As you know, the best marketing outfit in the world can never sell a product that does not meet the changing expectation of the target market, talk of being ahead of innovations, not just following innovations behind always. So, first of all, we need to do some little remodeling of product and attitude,” he said.

The two-day conference with the theme: Unveiling operational and business strategies to improve service delivery and take advantage of the global economic meltdown, had in attendance all the zonal managers across the federation and is aimed at reviewing, formulating, developing and implementing business and other related plans for the improvement of EMS Nigeria service.
