Telcos gear up for W.Afri.Tel-08

Telecommunications companies in the country are gearing up for the forthcoming annual West African International Telecommunications and Information Communication Technology Exhibition (W.Afri.Tel) scheduled to hold in Lagos in June.

Some of these telcos in the early bird registration and confirmation for the event include Sony Ericsson and Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) operator, Starcomms, ACCAT, Gilat Satcom, SkyVision, DCC Satellite and Networks, Transtector and I-Cell among others.

Commenting on this development, chief host of the event and editor-in-chief of IT & Telecom Digest, Mr. Mkpe Abang said his team is also ready to host the increasing number of participants in the show.

According to him, by confirmation of its participation, for instance, Sony Ericsson, has shown that it has Nigerian market at heart.

“Sony Ericsson has, by confirming its stand and participation at W.Afri.Tel 2008 this early, proves once again that it takes the Nigerian and West African, indeed, the African market, and how it also seriously wishes to push its products into the market,” he said.

Mr. Abang added that another early bird confirmation came from Starcomms Limited, stressing that the telco had previously won the Best Telephone Company of the Year 2007 in the fixed telephony category, and prides itself as one of the companies whose stands have been long-established.

Starcomms stand, the organisers noted, has been confirmed alongside ACCAT, just as Netcom Africa, which won the Best Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT) Company of the Year at NITTA 2007, has equally confirmed its participation.

The organisers disclosed that they have been inundated with requests for exhibition stands at this year’s W.Afri.Tel, which holds from June 3 to 5, at the New Expo Centre, Ocean View, Victoria Island, Lagos, and their duty is to do their optimal best to offer spaces on a first-come-first-serve allocation basis.

“The interest is very high; but because space is so limited, we can only confirm a company’s stand after it has gone through the processes we’ve put in place before confirming a company’s participation. If we go by the number of companies that have collected form for W.Afri.Tel 2008, it is more than three times the space available. So, we can only say a company is confirmed to participate once we receive its signed contract,” Abang explained.

He further said that in the next couple of weeks, more companies whose stands have been confirmed would be made public.

Initiated since year 2001 in the country by Exhibition Management Services (EMS), South Africa, the show has continued to attract increased participation.
