Ugwu applauds Omatek Computers

Minister of Commerce and Industry, Mr. Charles Ugwu, has applauded the management of Omatek Computers Limited, for being steadfast in manufacturing of Personal Computers (PCs) locally.

The minister who was on a working visit to Omatek factory in Ikeja-Lagos, said that he was pleased after a tour of the factory, and noted that the government is not unaware of the challenges facing Original Manufacturers Equipments (OEMs).

“Particularly I am pleased with the neat handling of production at Omatek,” he said.

The minister equally asked the company not to relent.

“I commend Omatek for coming this far. Do not lose hope for things are going to get better,” he said, including electricity power supply.

Mr. Ugwu also charged Omatek to explore all the markets both in the country and in the West African region.

While assuring of the government support, Mr. Ugwu added that in the next two years, “all the strategies being put in place would be ready to be explored and there would be a lot of things people like Omatek would benefit from such as infrastructure.”

According to him, a lot is going on now on the part of the government and he knew that the cost of generating independent power is still high, which is about three times the cost of government power supply – national grid.

Also commenting, the Director General, Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), Dr. John Akanya, described Omatek factory as a system that works.

“We have seen a system that works, that is why I accompanied the minister,” he asserted.

As said by him, having gone round the factory, Omatek is already working on quality standards specifications, he described as the most important aspect of any company survival.

“Our primary aim is to make sure that companies are sustained,” he said, noting that if a company is strong today and tomorrow is no longer there or folds, it means the company is playing down on the value of the company itself.

“That is why the ISO certification was instituted and centred on quality standards specifications which every company must operate with and not the face value of such companies,” he said.

Welcoming the minister and his team, the Managing Director, Omatek Computers Limited, Mrs. Florence Seriki, said that over the years, the company has grown from strength to strength and even ventured into neighbouring West African countries including Ghana where it now has a factory.

She later led the Minister through the manufacturing circle of the firm and asked for government support especially on import duties of Information Technology (IT) components so as to encourage local OEMs like Omatek.
