Glo, ALGON partner to boost youths empowerment

The Second National Operator (SNO), Globacom Limited, has entered partnership with the Oyo State chapter of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) to empower 1,650 unemployed youths of the state origin to start commercial telephone businesses across in the state.

The official launch of the partnership slated to hold tomorrow, Thursday in Ibadan, capital of Oyo State, Globacom official, said, would provide beneficiaries with Alcatel 311 handsets, branded parasols, tables, chairs, T-shirts, fez caps and recharge cards worth N4,000 to start commercial telephone business.

The launch scheduled at the State Government Secretariat, would be commissioned by the state governor, Senator Rasheed Ladoja, as the special guest of honour, even as caretaker chairmen of the 33 local government councils as well as key government officials are expected to grace the occasion.

Globacom sources also said that beneficiaries of the scheme would be drawn from the 33 local government councils of the state.

According to our sources, the partnership with Oyo ALGON is in continuation of Globacom’s youth empowerment and poverty eradication scheme, which was launched shortly after commencing operations.

The company has launched similar schemes with several state governments including Kwara, Imo, Osun, Bauchi, Borno, Adamawa, Abia and Rivers states.

Others are Edo, Jigawa, Lagos, Niger, Ogun, Cross River and Bayelsa states, while thousands of call centre packages have been provided under the programme for unemployed youths to start their own businesses.

Globacom also has a partnership with the National Poverty Eradication Programme (NAPEP), Shell Petroleum Development Corporation (SPDC) and the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) to help unemployed youths to establish call centres, thereby providing economic freedom to Nigerians.

The scheme involves the distribution of handsets, tables, chairs and parasols to thousands of beneficiaries. Ultimately, the beneficiaries will be transformed to operators of mini business centers that will offer telephone, fax and Internet services.

Meanwhile, Nigerian students have given kudos to the telco’s introduction of voice short messaging service (SMS) by the second national operator, Globacom.

The Voice Short Messaging Service (voice-SMS), is a package that allows subscribers to record and send messages to recipients, even as it’s the first of its kind in the country which is a “talk” and “listen” messaging alternative to the regular “type” and “read” service provided by Short Messaging Service (SMS).
