Microsoft’s 2005 Best System Builder in Africa, Omatek Computers Limited, has introduced a new initiative known as e-Xpress to enable Nigerians own Information and Communication Technology (ICT) equipment within its products.
This cuts across digital office and home entertainment products.
General Manager, Omatek Computers, Mr. Yomi Soyinka informed that the introduction of the e-Xpress was to enable Nigerians take advantage of the initiative with installmental payments.
According to him, Omatek has made plans to spread the payment over 12 to 24 months.
Mr. Soyinka also said that within the e-Xpress there exist sub-initiative such as e-Consumer, e-Tertiary and e-Youth.
On the e-Consumer, the GM said, it affords Nigerians and consumers at large the chance of owning their own Personal Computers (PCs).
“This eases the acquisition mode of an average Nigerian towards owning a computer,” he declared.
e-Tertiary, Mr. Soyinka noted was introduced to address the current low level of ICT skills, which ordinarily should begin with computer literacy at the education sector and tertiary institutions particularly.
Besides, bundled in the e-Xpress is the e-Youth project of the company, which is an extension of the drive to empower the youth in the country and in essence, bridge what the PC manufacturer called, the “sorry state of the digital divide that currently exists, especially among our youths”.
Meanwhile, the manufacturer of computers and entertainment convergence systems, Omatek recently advanced plans to partner with a Massachusetts-based non-profit association, One-Laptop Per Child, on the production of $100 laptop to boost children education in developing countries including Nigeria.
ITRealms Online recalls that the partnership is expected to spur Omatek to serve as an outsource for the One Laptop Per Child initiative led by renowned Prof. Nicholas Negroponte, as its chairman.
Deputy General Manager, Omatek, Mr. Olumide Akinmtimi who revealed this after a session with the Director, One Laptop Per Child for Middle East and African, Mr. Khaleed Hassaounah, in Lagos, said, under the proposed collaboration would see to the one million laptops expected to be distributed among Nigerian schools, which according to the association will be localized through adding value to both the software and hardware aspects.
He also enjoined government to support this collaboration by ensuring the infrastructure such as power supply is there always and availability of fund to enable them meet the target with good local inputs.
