The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has attained significant global momentum by prioritizing the privacy rights of the nation's teeming population, reports ITREALMS.
The session, which formed a vital part of the 2026 National Privacy Week, was specifically designed to enhance the data protection expertise of journalists and media practitioners.
Dr. Olatunji characterized the past two years as a period defined by steady growth and international recognition, attributing the commission's success to deliberate investments in capacity development.
These efforts have successfully placed Nigeria on the global data privacy map, fostering trust and attracting interest from international partners.
The National Commissioner further disclosed that the NDPC’s impact is now tangible in the economy, with over 23,000 jobs created and an estimated ₦7.2 billion in economic value generated through compliance activities and professional services.
Despite these significant financial milestones, Dr. Olatunji emphasized that the commission’s mandate transcends mere numbers.
He clarified that the NDPC was not established as a revenue-generating agency, but rather as a human-centric institution dedicated to protecting the fundamental rights and freedoms of all citizens.
Addressing the media during the training segment, Barrister Alexander Onwe of the Strategic Partnership and Communication Department stressed that the essence of the exercise was to reinforce the media’s role in safeguarding public interest.
He highlighted the commission's people-centered approach to regulation, which prioritizes collaboration and public trust in an increasingly digital world. Onwe noted that understanding data protection allows journalists to better protect their news sources, avoid unnecessary legal exposure, and uphold individual rights while reporting.
He further emphasized that the NDPC views the media as a co-guardian of digital rights rather than just a stakeholder.
Onwe concluded by urging media professionals to move beyond seeing data protection as an abstract concept and to embrace it as a practical tool for institutional resilience.
He specifically advised journalists not to store data indefinitely, but to ensure it is securely deleted once it has been verified and utilized.
