Nigerian medical student, Chinaza Joy Ugota clinches global distinction @2026 Sejong Sijo Poetry Contest - ITREALMS

Nigerian undergraduate medical student from Ebonyi State, Chinaza Joy Ugota, has achieved global recognition at the prestigious 2026 Sejong International Sijo Competition, reports ITREALMS.
The highly competitive annual contest, hosted in South Korea, attracted a staggering 917 entries submitted by poets across 80 countries spanning six continents.
Designed to foster global appreciation for traditional Korean literary forms, the competition challenges participants worldwide to compose original works in English using the intricate sijo structure; a centuries-old Korean poetic style characterized by specific rhythmic cadence and thematic narrative progression.

Ugota emerged as one of only six poets globally to be honored with an Honorable Mention by the competition's international panel of literary judges.

She shared the honor alongside Ghanaian poet McLord Selasi Azalekor and four American finalists: Lynda La Rocca, Linda Hendelman, Carissa Coane, and Emily Rose Raboy.

Ugota’s remarkable feat, ITREALMS gathered, underscored a rising trend of multidisciplinary excellence among young Nigerian undergraduates who seamlessly combine rigorous science and health disciplines with creative expression.

In a public commendation celebrating the achievement, media analyst and commentator Nwankwo Peter Nwankwo highlighted the profound impact of positive academic milestones in reshaping international perceptions of Nigerian youth.

He emphasized that triumphs of this caliber showcase the resilience, intellect, and global competitiveness inherent in the nation’s student population.

By excelling in a specialized Asian poetic form, Ugota not only highlights the versatility of Nigerian scholars, but also establishes a unique cultural bridge between West Africa and South Korea through the medium of international literature.
