New leadership: Archbishop Ndagoso emerges CBCN President, Adewale Martins, VP - ITREALMS

History was made today, February 24, 2026, at the ongoing First Plenary Meeting of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) with the election of a new set of principal officers to steer the affairs of the Conference, reports ITREALMS.

The election marks the end of the productive tenure of the Archbishop Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji-led administration and ushers in a new executive team representing a broad cross-section of Nigeria’s ecclesiastical provinces.
The newly elected principal officers, who will lead the Conference for the next four years, include:

President: Archbishop Matthew Man'oso Ndagoso (Archdiocese of Kaduna)

Vice President: Archbishop Alfred Adewale Martins (Archdiocese of Lagos)

Secretary: Bishop Peter Kayode Odetoyinbo (Diocese of Abeokuta)

Assistant Secretary: Bishop Peter Nworie Chukwu (Diocese of Abakaliki)

According to a circular released by the Secretary General of the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria (CSN), Very Rev. Fr. Michael Banjo, the elections extended beyond the principal roles. Several other Bishops were elected to oversee various strategic departments and specialized units within the Catholic Secretariat to ensure robust administrative and pastoral efficiency.

The new officers are scheduled for a formal presentation during the closing ceremony of the current Plenary. This leadership change comes at a pivotal time for the Church in Nigeria, as it continues to navigate complex socio-economic and spiritual challenges.

The CSN has called on the faithful to pray for the Holy Spirit’s guidance over the new leaders as they begin their four-year mandate to shepherd the Church in Nigeria.
