Employees insist UBA sacked over 4000 on festive layoff - ITREALMS

ITREALMS:

Some staff of the United Bank for Africa (UBA) have insisted that the bank lied over the number of employees laid off as the festive season winds down into the new year, reports ITREALMS.

The actual number sacked they alleged was in the neighborhood of 4000, because it was a nationwide layoff, our sources said.

This came as those with staff loan got next to nothing as severance packages  despite the loan was underwritten by the insurance in case of any eventualities including sack or unemployed.

According to Thisislagos, UBA had earlier reportedly sacked over 1,000 staff early in the New Year, but affected employees were said to be above 4000, which is over 300 more than reported.

One of the affected employees from a Lagos branch who pleaded anonymity offered more details on how the retrenchment occurred.

Thisislagos also quoted the lady staff as saying that bank sent emails to branch managers with a list of shortlisted for retrenchment. In turn, she said, the branch managers informed the affected staff who were then asked to resign or lose their entitlements.

"The affected staff were immediately locked out of their systems with all access denied" she was further quoted.

As said by her, the letters of resignation were done under duress, insisting they deserve justice instead of this kind of treatment.
