NUJ warns FG, Lai Mohammed over pressure to regulate social media - ITREALMS

The National Executive Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has warned the Federal Government (FG) and Minister of Information & Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed to be weary of those pressurizing and itching in some quarters for regulate social media in Nigeria, reports ITREALMS.

Arising from its meeting in Lokoja, Kogi State with attendance of all the National Officers as well as chairman and secretaries of state councils, NEC frowned at some social media influencers who indiscriminately masquerading as professional journalists and members of NUJ to desist or risk being reported to the Police.

NEC equally rejected in entirety a step by the Federal Government to regulate social operators in the country.

NUJ called the Minister of Information, Alhaji Mohammed not to succumb to the temptation of restricting the social media which has the tendency of easily leading to gaging the media.

A communique from the NEC meeting endorsed by the National Secretary, Shuaibu Usman Leman, further called on the Federal Government, INEC, security agencies and political gladiators to ensure hitch-free electoral processes before, durng and after the forthcoming in Kogi and Bayelsa State elections.
