ICANN introduces 500+ new gTLDs

 The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has said that over 500 new generic top-level domains (gTLDs) have now been introduced into the Internet, reports ITRealms.

The gTLD .NTT, the Nippon Telegraph and Telephone, ITRealms reports, was the 500th new gTLD to be delegate with new domains rolling out at an average of one per day. 

ITRealms also reports that the new gTLD programme is the Internet’s largest expansion ever, introducing hundreds of new top-level domain names or “strings” which could become available in the next few years. 

“With the first four strings delegated on 23 October 2014, the programme continues to make advancements and enable enhanced competition, innovation and choice,” ICANN official confided in ITRealms.

At the ongoing ICANN52 in Singapore, ITRealms gathered that the new gTLD Programme: Status, Reviews and Next Round Session would be held.

This, ITRealms learnt would enable interest internet enthusiasts to learn about new milestones and deadlines instituted to help registries reach delegation in a timely manner. The session will also cover the programme’s plans to move to the next application round.
