The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has accelerated its drive to establish a fortified Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) for Nigeria, leveraging advanced encryption frameworks to boost national security, data sovereignty, and digital governance, reports ITREALMS.
Representing the NIMC DG/CEO, Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, the Head of Infrastructure Technology and Identity Databases (IT/IDD), Mr. Sulaiman Falade, unveiled these strategic benchmarks at the high-level digital conference themed "Building Africa's Digital Foundations Together" in Abuja.
A press statement available to ITREALMS by Kayode Adegoke, PhD, Head, Corporate Communications, NIMC, on May 23, 2026, confirmed that the commission is aggressively executing structural reforms to build an interoperable identity ecosystem capable of supporting secure digital transactions across both public and private sectors.
Central to this technological transformation is the deployment of the National Public Key Infrastructure (nPKI) alongside the National Identification Number (NIN). While the NIN serves as the primary foundational identifier for digital authentication and biometric verification, the nPKI acts as the cryptographic backbone, ensuring data integrity, protecting citizens' data privacy, and preventing identity theft in high-volume digital transactions.
"NIMC is driving Nigeria's DPI through deep institutional collaboration and the deployment of highly secure, next-generation digital identity systems," Engr. Coker-Odusote stated. "Through the integration of these systems and the rollout of the nPKI, Nigeria is actively strengthening trust in online interactions and protecting its digital economy."
The commission highlighted its strict alignment with the Presidential Directive issued on April 5, 2024, which legally mandates all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to integrate the NIN as a mandatory baseline for all digital services, data capture, and biometric authentication.
NIMC confirmed that it has fully deployed the necessary technological interfaces and secure Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) to ensure seamless cross-agency integration, eliminating data silos across the Federal Government.
Engr. Coker-Odusote urged stakeholders across the technology, banking, and telecom sectors to continue supporting the digital identity ecosystem. She reiterated that the commission remains committed to leveraging advanced technology and robust encryption systems to build a more connected, transparent, and digitally resilient nation.
