This honor, reserved for only a handful of industry leaders throughout the GSMA’s history, acknowledges a career defined by the expansion of connectivity across borders, bridging the gap between governments, businesses, and over half a billion consumers worldwide.

The presentation took place at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, where the significance of the achievement was underscored by the presence of His Majesty Felipe VI of Spain, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, the President of Catalonia, Salvador Illa, and other global leaders.

Mittal’s recognition stems from his visionary leadership in building Bharti Airtel into a premier global mobile operator, with robust operations spanning India and Africa.

His pioneering work in emerging markets, coupled with his tenure as GSMA Chairman from 2017 to 2018, cemented his legacy as a champion for policies that incentivize investment, foster innovation, and accelerate digital inclusion.

Reflecting on his journey, Mittal framed the award not as a personal milestone, but as a testament to the collective growth of the industry.

He highlighted that telecommunication remains a vital force for expanding opportunity and placing essential services in the hands of individuals globally.

He noted that helping to evolve this sector into an accelerator for modern progress has been a privilege, and he emphasized a continued commitment to working with global stakeholders to ensure that innovation creates lasting equity and opportunity for future generations.

This honor adds to a distinguished history of recognition for Mittal, who previously received the GSMA Chairman’s Award in 2008 and 2016 for his exceptional contributions to the growth and development of the global mobile industry.

His trajectory continues to mirror the rise of telecom as an essential utility for modern development, marking a defining era in global communications and the democratization of digital access.
