The Centre for Crisis Communication (CCC) has raised an urgent alarm over a dangerous convergence of escalating insecurity, political distrust, and sophisticated disinformation campaigns, warning that these forces are already aggressively shaping public sentiment ahead of the 2027 general elections, reports ITREALMS.
The 42-page report, produced for Crisis Communication Hub (CCH) stakeholders, utilized PRrev, an advanced AI-driven media monitoring tool developed by IMPR. The analysis tracked narratives across X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, WhatsApp, and diaspora forums, focusing on security incidents, economic pressures, and conflict early warning signals.
The study highlighted how recent national events are increasingly weaponized through coordinated falsehoods. A primary case study was the March 16, 2026, triple suicide bombing in Maiduguri, which coincided with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s official visit to the United Kingdom from March 17 to 19. CCC analysts noted that this overlap created a “leadership legitimacy strain,” where competing narratives dominated public discourse.
A major highlight of the report was the exposure of a high-impact disinformation campaign that exploited the Maiduguri tragedy. The CCC revealed that PRNigeria’s fact-checking team detected a fabricated statement falsely attributed to U.S. President Donald Trump, purportedly criticizing President Tinubu’s UK trip in the wake of the bombings.
The impact of this single piece of fake news was staggering:
Total Views: Over 500,000 within 48 hours.
Engagement: More than 5,200 reposts.
The Gap: Corrective information struggled to achieve even 10% of the initial false narrative's visibility.
“This represents one of the most consequential disinformation spikes in Nigeria’s emerging 2027 pre-election environment,” the report stated, warning that the coordination behind the fake statement reflects a new level of sophistication among bad actors.
The CCC identified five core themes currently driving the national conversation:
Accountability vs. Loyalty: Debates over leadership versus partisan defense.
Security vs. Diplomacy: Tensions between domestic crises and foreign engagements.
Digital Outrage: Public grief amplified by social media algorithms.
Diaspora Influence: Narratives from abroad heavily influencing domestic perceptions.

The Centre warned that the intersection of insecurity and distrust poses a systemic threat to national cohesion. The CCC observed that information vacuums; often caused by delayed or inconsistent official government responses, are quickly filled by speculation and emotionally charged falsehoods.
To safeguard the democratic process, the report calls for:
Real-time digital monitoring systems to detect disinformation early.
Strengthened inter-agency coordination for crisis communication.
Mass media literacy campaigns to help citizens identify "deep fakes" and fabricated quotes.
Strategic engagement with digital influencers to promote verified information.
The CCC concluded that the current climate is a preview of the challenges defining the road to 2027. Without proactive, technology-driven communication strategies, Nigeria faces a deepening crisis of public trust that could undermine national stability in the digital age.
