The Nigerian Information Technology Reporters’ Association (NITRA) concluded its annual end‑of‑year meeting on Thursday, 18 December 2025 with a powerful reflection on the symbiotic relationship between New Horizons and Nigeria’s IT journalists, reports ITREALMS.

Hosted at a New Horizons training facility, courtesy of the company’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Tim Akano, the gathering underscored the long‑standing mutual support between the media and the organization.

The event venue was secured after NITRA Secretary Chidiebere Nwankwo reached out to Mr. Akano, who promptly offered one of New Horizons’ training centres free of charge.

This gesture, participants noted, is emblematic of Akano’s consistent backing of the association.

Over the past two decades, New Horizons has not only hosted multiple NITRA meetings but also equipped countless IT reporters with core technology skills; making journalists among the first beneficiaries of the company’s world‑class training programmes.

During his remarks, Mr. Tim Akano acknowledged the pivotal role the media played in the early growth of New Horizons. He reaffirmed his commitment to the partnership, pledging to continue providing free IT skills training for members of the press.

He traced the company’s evolution from a modest start‑up with a handful of staff to one of Africa’s foremost IT training institutions, now employing approximately 500 personnel across numerous centres nationwide.

Key highlights from his address include 500,000+ youths trained across Nigeria, with a strong focus on tertiary‑institution students; a recent strategic partnership with Afe Babalola University to deliver practical IT curricula; and ongoing collaborations with other universities to bridge the skills gap in the digital economy.

Akano also shared personal anecdotes of giving back to the media community that supported his entrepreneurial journey.

Veteran IT journalist Aaron Ukodie recounted how Akano facilitated a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) placement and scholarship for his daughter, a graduate of Accounting from the University of Johannesburg.

Similarly, Yemi Adeyemi of The Guardian highlighted how Akano stepped in to provide mandatory IT training for a child after several ICT firms declined the request.

These acts, participants said, exemplify Akano’s dedication to human‑capital development and his gratitude toward the media’s role in New Horizons’ success.

ITREALMS recalled that Horizons is Nigeria’s leading IT skills training organization, with a network of training centres nationwide. 

Since its inception 20 years ago, the company has empowered over half a million youths with industry‑relevant digital skills.
