In a landmark session, Justice Jeremy Johnson, on May 5, 2023, delivered judgement on the case against Ike Ekweremadu who was sentenced nine years, eight months; wife, Beatrice - four years six months; and Dr. Obeta - 10 years,

Who is Justice Jeremy Johnson:

Justice Jeremy Johnson was a Queen's Counsel as at 2019 when he was appointed as a Justice of the High Court and assigned to the Queen’s Bench Division.


ITREALMS gathered that Jeremy Johnson QC appointment as a Justice of the High Court, took effect from 1 October 2019.


The appointment was made by The Queen on the recommendation of the Lord Chancellor, following a competition run by the Judicial Appointments Commission (JAC).


The Lord Chief Justice thereafter assigned him to the Queen’s Bench Division.

JAC is an independent commission that selects candidates for judicial office in courts and tribunals in England and Wales, and for some tribunals whose jurisdiction extends to Scotland or Northern Ireland.

Johnson joined 5 Essex Court following pupillage in 1994 and was a member of the Attorney General’s Panel of Counsel to the Crown and a Special Advocate.

Equally, Johnson, who took silk in 2011, was appointed as a Recorder in 2009 and authorised to sit as a Deputy High Court Judge sitting in the Queen’s Bench Division in 2016 and in the Administrative Court in 2018.

In March 2023 Justice Johnson find former Nigeria's Senate Deputy President, Ike Ekweremadu, the wife Beatrice and a medical doctor, Dr. Obinna Obeta guilty of organ transplant under the 2015 Modern Slavery Act in the United Kingdom.


ITREALMS further gathered that in the United Kingdom and in some Commonwealth countries, a King's Counsel known as (KC) during the reign of a king, or Queen's Counsel as (QC) during the reign of a queen; is a lawyer usually a barrister or (in Scotland) advocate) who is typically a senior trial lawyer.
