Anambra State Anti-Grazing bill scales second reading - ITREALMS

A bill for a law to prohibit and abolish open and Nomadic cattle and other livestock grazing and rearing in Anambra State and to establish cattle and other livestock ranches in the state, has scaled the second reading in the Anambra State House of Assembly.

Introducing the bill during plenary, the majority leader, Dr. Nnamdi Okafor explained that the bill is aimed at arresting any form of open cattle rearing and grazing in Anambra State, promote modern techniques in animal husbandry, prevent the destruction of farms by nomads as well as stop killings and herder - farmer clashes in the state.

On his part, the member representing Orumba North Constituency, Sir. Emeka Aforka who highlighted the economic benefits of the bill to his constituency, noted that it will control violent herdsman who, of recent have wreaked havoc in different communities across the state.

Speaker of the House, Honourable Uche Okafor who expressed worry that the open grazing in Anambra State has become source of worry to all, assured that when the bill is passed into law, open grazing will be a thing of the past.

Later, the bill was referred to the House committee on Agriculture to make amends where necessary and report back to the House within one week.
