Digital migration workshop kicks off in Abuja

A two-day workshop on digital migration would today, Monday kick-off at the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja (FCTA).

Coordinator of the event, Nigeria Digital Migration workshop, Mr. Emmanuel Edet disclosed that the workshop is being organized by the Association for Progressive Communication in collaboration in collaboration with London-based online news medium, Balancing Act and Open Society Institute.

The workshop, he said, has been scheduled for Tuesday, June 28, 2011 and would be preceded by a meeting of media practitioners on 27 June 2011 at the Digital Bridge Institute (DBI), Utako District, Abuja.

The lead papers, he said would be presented by the chief executive of Balancing Act, Mr. Russell Southwood on understanding the issue and status of digital transition.

Even as a presentation would be made by representative of Presidential Committee on Transition to Digital Broadcasting in Nigeria, while panel of representatives from different stakeholder groups such as government, media companies, consumer groups among others.

According to the programme of event made available to ITRealms Online, the duo of ICT axe-broadcaster, Mr. Bayero Agabi and industry multiple award-winning journalist, Mr. Remmy Nweke, would preside over the sessions on Monday morning and afternoon respectively.

ITRealms Online gathered that the objectives of the workshop comprises provision of information on the key issues related to digital migration, explore the current state of play in Nigeria, discuss approaches to addressing some of the key challenges.

Participants, Edet said, would cut across the Ministry of Information and Communication, National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), TV Broadcasters, Civil Society organizations, Nigeria Union of Journalists, Joint Action Committee on Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Awareness and Development (JACITAD) to name a few. Pointing out that Africa’s digital transition in broadcasting has the potential to improve both the quantity and quality of what is available on TV and to increase the number of people who will be able to watch it.

He emphasised that the transition from analogue to digital affects different stakeholders in different ways, even as the workshop would bring together key stakeholders from the different sectors impacted by digital migration.

  3. I applaud the level of public awareness on digital migration or the transition to a digital spectrum in Nigeria. The country's chances, however, of meeting the deadline is narrow because of infrastructural problems.

  4. Michael, it's not only the infrastructure that's becoming a problem. Politics is also hampering the digital migration. Another problem is the fund to buy equipment, including set top boxes.
