Twitter overtakes bbc.com in July – Report

Social networking site, Twitter, was last weekend reported as overtaken the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) in terms of visitors and popularity in the month of July.

Nomensa reports that Twitter exceeded the 50 million monthly visitors mark for the first time, making it now one of the top 50 most popular websites globally.

The report quoted new data from comScore as saying that in July, Twitter attracted 51.6 million unique users, up 7.1 million from June.

The increase in traffic puts Twitter ahead of the BBC and significantly, the majority of new visitors are not coming from the United States (US).

“International visitors now represent 59 per cent of traffic, an increase of 4 per cent on the previous month,” the report stated.

Equally, Facebook, was reported as maintaining the lead in popularity over Twitter, with the Twitter audience being just a quarter the size of Facebook.

“Facebook averages over 200 million unique users every month,” part of the report stated.

This is coming as Twitter announced its plans to launch retweet feature, which is intended to give a boost to the already made mark by the social networking site.

This new features, is expected in the area of Twitter getting more user-friendly homepage, even as it entered dictionary.

ITRealms Online further gathered that Twitter is to be added to the Collins English Dictionary later this year.

The mini-blog site which debut since 2006, has made some remarkable growth this year, especially the upsurge that heralded the death of Michael Jackson.

Experts said that the social networking tool is used by millions of people all over the world to send brief messages and share information over the web.

But as gathered, the word ‘Twitter’ will be added to the 30th anniversary edition of the dictionary, which will be published later this year.

Equally, the word Twitter, is billed to be listed as both a noun and a verb, under the noun entry its meaning will state “a website where people can post short messages about their current activities.”
