WWTBAM: Demand increases for children's edition

The MTN sponsored Who Wants To Be A Millionaire (WWTBAM) Television show, is gaining momentum as call for its special edition, mostly for children has continued to attract demands.

Managing Director of the organising firm, Ultima Communications, Mr. Femi Ayeni, informed that demand for the special editions have increased, especially for the children, moreso now that another festive season of Easter is around the corner.

Champion Infotel recalls that a 10-year old pupil of Montessori International Port Harcourt, Master Tomiwa Byron, was drafted into the millionaire club through the show last December.

The primary-six pupil, who emerged at the special edition of WWTBAM held in Lagos, to mark the festive season, said his ambition is to become a petrochemical engineer capped with a doctorate degree, as he emerged N1 million richer from the hotseat of the programme hosted by Frank Edoho.

Whereas Byron smiled home with his first million Naira cheque, another youngster, a 9-year old Ms Esomsidimma Igwe, who aspires to be a Neurosurgeon from Linsy Nursery School, Lekki, went home with N500,000.

This is coming as the special edition has been gathering momentum and pitting some children against their parents for not taking them to the TV show.

Although globally, this kind of TV show is strictly for people above 18 years of age, but given the recent development based on positive reactions and quest for another edition for children, Ultima may consider another festive edition during the forthcoming Easter.

According to Mr. Ayeni, peculiarity with children being winners in such a programme is that they will not handle cash but invest it into their education as a kind of trust fund, unlike their adult counterparts who will prefer to handle cash given lots of challenges of life facing them.

He explained that the initial idea of the children special edition was a success as it produced two millionaires.

He also argued that it is better to invest in the future generation through the special edition for children.

“It is good to begin to set some structures for children in a sector which at the moment is very active in the country,” he said.

Stressing that it could inspire children to choose a career in the broadcasting sector because of their love for WWTBAM and the host, Frank, which industry observers agreed is a major component of the information age.

However, some industry analysts see the special edition, as being able to help in building knowledge base of the children and prepare them for some aptitude conditions in life.
