ICT skills essential for SMEs – Atabansi

Skill in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is very essential for the Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), says the managing director, Hewlett Packard West Africa, Dr Lloyd Atabansi.

Speaking at a recent two-day summit tagged ‘Africa Small Business Summit’ held in Lagos, Dr. Atabansi noted that Information and Communications Technology could be significantly helpful to micro enterprises in respect of growth.

He also said that it would enable them to be more productive thereby facilitating the creation of more jobs in their communities.

As said by him, the smallest of small businesses represent a powerful economic engine and by learning how to apply information and communications technology effectively, these businesses could overcome typical hurdles to growth.

“Such as low productivity, a lack of competitiveness and the limited skill level of owners and workers,” he said.

Dr. Atabansi equally tasked the Federal Government to put appropriate infrastructure in place to serve as effective backbone for business growth.

“Government is very key in accelerating economic growth through provision of enabling environment for private businesses to thrive,” he said.

On the contribution of HP to the growth of SMEs in the country, he said his firm has renewed its commitment to the micro enterprise development industry around the world and is extending its reach to Africa in 2008.

“Through this initiative, HP seeks to advance the use of technology in micro enterprise development programmes in order to improve efficiency, effectiveness and sustainability of micro enterprise in underserved communities around the globe”, he stressed.

In addition, he said, HP’s investments would focus not only on providing technology access to micro enterprises, but also on training micro enterprises on how to use technology to build and grow their businesses.

He added that HP is working with Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN) and Shehu Ciroma Foundation in assisting to teach graduates on how to use ICT and ways for them to start and grow small businesses.

Dr. Atabansi noted that HP understands the problems facing SMEs in cope with various challenges and will continue to assist them in using ICT.
