Blind student wins @ Glo Campus storm

A physically challenged student of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile Ife, Tolu Olawuni has won a brand new General Packet Radio Service (GPRS)-enabled Nokia 6070i phone in the Glo Campus Storm Reloaded, just as hundreds of other students defied a heavy downpour to watch the show.

The students trooped out en masse to welcome the train, which stormed the campus with artistes, like Face of the erstwhile Plantashion Boyz fame, Ekwe-the Stereo Man among others while ace comedian, Basketmouth and Ebuka of Big Brother Nigeria fame were compeered at the event.

Other students who also participated in the competitions went home with consolation prizes ranging from T-shirts to fez caps, recharge cards and Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) packs.

Tolu Olawuni, while receiving his prize commended Globacom for pioneering affordable telecommunications services in the country.

The event, which kicked off at about five o’clock in the evening ran till about 10pm in the night as the students kept calling for more.

To make the event livelier, students were encouraged to participate in dancing and singing competitions during which Adekanye Segun, a 100 level student of the Department of Philosophy went home with a flat screen LG television set, while Tolu Olawuni, otherwise known as Lyrical Icon, a blind 200 level student of Religious Studies in the Faculty of Education Administration and Planning became the proud winner of a Nokia phone and a Globacom SIM pack.

The Zonal Manager, West, Globacom, Mr. Lorenzo Gomez, informed at the show that the telco was determined to identify more with youths who constitute about 50 per cent of its subscriber base by ensuring that educative and entertaining shows like this are staged on the campuses.

He also said, the company had initiated several services that are exciting to youths among which are Glo-Me-To-You, Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS), GPRS and other services which were second to none in the telecommunications industry in the country.

He further assured the students that more benefiting services would still be introduced by Globacom in no distant future.
