Zinox boosts Nekede Poly with PC project

By Remmy Nweke

ZINOX Computers has concluded plans to boost the Federal Polytechnic Nekede-Owerri (FPNO), Imo State with Personal Computers (PCs) at affordable rates.

Disclosing this to newsmen, FPNO’s Rector, Mr. Onyekwere Nwankwo, said the initiative would boost PC usage and penetration in the school and among students and staff.

Zinox is one of the four local PC manufacturers in the country that have endorsement of the Federal government.

The initiative, he said, enables students and staff to purchase PCs and even Laptops at a discounted price and pay over time on installment.

The school, which was founded in 1978 by the late Chief Sam Mbakwe’s administration in old Imo State, he said, currently has about 160 PCs with majority of these PCs distributed between the Schools of Telecommunications Engineering and Computer Science as well as Business and Industrial Science.

Additionally, Mr. Nwankwo, accompanied by the registrar, Mrs. Chiaka D. Onukogu, disclosed hat FPNO has introduced a system in the school to enable students invest in PCs for their departments rather than using such money for organize parties.

Students, he explained sometimes contribute to buy PCs and the deal is that if they buy two, the school authorities would give them another two, making it four PCs, so it is like a competitive challenge.

He traced the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) craze of the institution to year 2002 when the computer science department was established and subsequently nurtured through internally generated revenue, with assistance from the Niger Delta Development Corporation (NDDC), with an Internet provision facilitated by the United States Embassy in Abuja.

He also said that recently, through the federal government’s funding, FPNO, has established two major computer centers, housing 50 computers each, namely in the schools of Business and Industrial science

“We have a center for the Virtual Library housed in our library unit. All these centers are coordinated through the Internet center in the school of engineering,” he said.
