CANi to impact positively – Romeo

Remmy Nweke

Government Assisted (Personal Computer) Purchase Programme (GAPP) known as the Computer for All Nigerians Initiative (CANi), has declared its resolve to impact positively on the citizenry.

Director, CANi Programme Management Office (PMO), Mr. Soji Romeo, gave this assurance in his submission at the recently concluded forum at the federal capital territory (FCT) Abuja on “Connecting Rural Communities Africa 2006,” said that the project is poised to impact positively on the populace.

“CANi is a well-thought out programme and is poised to greatly impact positively on the lives of ordinary Nigerians,” he asserted.

Mr. Romeo also said that the goal is not mere provision of PCs, but to add its voice in the development of an Information and Communications Technology (ICT) culture within the Nigerian society.

While urging Nigerians to grab the opportunities CANi has put on the table, Mr. Romeo noted that the implementation strategy has been structured in phases.

This, he said, is to ensure wider reach and penetration to all segments of society, namely the federal public servants and parastatals, state governments, corporate organisations, educational institutions, small and medium scale enterprises, cooperative societies and the entire spectrum of the Nigerian public.

He stressed that CANi’s objective is to make computers available to Nigerians at an affordable prices, arrange loan finance for the purchases at preferential interest rates and under a convenient repayment plan, which would eventually build a computer-literate workforce for the nation, and also achieve the nation’s millennium development goals on Information Technology (IT).
CANi is an initiative of government in collaboration of Microsoft and Intel as well as local hardware partners including Beta, Brian, Omatek, Zinox, IBM and Hewlett Packard (HP), even as the scheme has financial partners to include UBA, Fidelity Bank and Skye Bank currently.
