ICANN considers 2-character in new gTLD regime

Echoes from the 51st public meeting of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), which ended in Los Angeles, United States of America last weekend shows that ICANN is considering the introduction of two-character in the new generic Top Level Domain (gTLD) regime, reports DigitalSENSE Business News.

It was also gathered by DigitalSENSE Business News that with this development, ICANN officials would develop strategies for the implementation of an efficient technique for the two-character domains, which is expected to be reserved within the new gTLD registry agreement.

DigitalSENSE Business News further gathered that following this anticipation, all two-character ASCII labels would be withheld from registration or allocated to Registry Operators at the second level within a given Top Level Domain (TLD).

Equally DigitalSENSE Business News recalls that the American Standard Code for Information Interchange (ASCII ); which is a character-encoding scheme originally based on the English alphabet, and encodes 128 specified characters into 7-bit binary integers.

ICANN sources disclosed to DigitalSENSE Business News that such labels may not be activated in the Domain Name System (DNS) outside the Registry Operator, provided that such two-character label strings may be released to the extent that Registry Operator reaches agreement with the related government and country-code manager of the string as specified in the ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 standard.

DigitalSENSE Business News, further gathered that the Registry Operator may also propose the release of these reservations based on its implementation of measures to avoid confusion with the corresponding country codes, subject to approval by ICANN.
