Raymond King explains ICANNWiki.com

Remmy Nweke in San Francisco, California, United States

The founder of ICANNWiki.com, Mr. Raymond King has given insight why the wiki is essential.

Speaking to ITRealms Online at the on-going 40th public meeting of Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), he said that ICANNWiki.com is a grassroots project, involving community efforts to compile articles on people, companies, and organisations related to ICANN and the domain name industry.

Universally, a wiki has come to be accepted literally as a website that allows the easy creation and editing of any number of interlinked web pages via a web browser using a simplified markup language or a WYSIWYG text editor.

Wikis are typically powered by wiki software and are often used to create collaborative works. The first Wiki was traced to Ward Cunningham, the developer of first wiki software called, WikiWikiWeb.

Mr. King said that ICANNWiki.com provides a resource of valuable third party information for ICANN goers and people following ICANN from afar as to what is happening within the community.

“We provide an open platform, managed by the community for the community, governed by wiki values such as transparency, assuming good faith and working where you want,” he said, stressing that the project is not affiliated with ICANN and is based at Portland, Oregon in the Northwestern part of United States.

Founded in 2005 with the assistants of Brandon Sanders and John Stanton, he said, ICANNWiki.org was reluanched in 2010 as ICANNWiki.com.

He emphasised that the project has improve tremendously since then and has been supported by a number of community entities including Verisign, neustar, ICANN, DomainsBot, DomainTools, Dot pro and Afilias to name a few.

He pointed out that ICANN, a non-profit corporation headquartered in Marina del Rey, California, United States, was created on September 18, 1998 and incorporated on September 30, 1998 to oversee a number of Internet-related tasks previously performed directly on behalf of the U.S. government by other organizations, mainly by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA), which is currently the administrative arm of ICANN.

ICANN is responsible for managing the Internet Protocol address spaces (IPv4 and IPv6) and assignment of address blocks to regional Internet registries, for maintaining registries of Internet protocol identifiers, and for the management of the top-level domain name space (DNS root zone), which includes the operation of root nameservers. Most visibly, much of its work has concerned the introduction of new generic top-level domains (TLDs). The technical work of ICANN is referred to as the IANA function.

The primary principles of operation for ICANN have been described as helping to preserve the operational stability of the Internet; to promote competition; to achieve broad representation of global Internet community; and to develop policies appropriate to its mission through bottom-up, consensus-based processes.
