eTranzact partners MTN on payphone deployment

Electronic payment service provider, eTranzact Global South Africa has partnered with MTN Group to deploy Community Pay Phone in South Africa.

Confirming this, the Chief Executive Officer, eTranzact South Africa, Mr. Reggie Nxumalo, in a press statement made available by the Brand Manager, eTranzact Nigeria, Mr. Adeyemi Opene, said, the initiative was authorized by the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) and is intended to achieve affordable telephony services in disadvantaged areas.
Nxumalo said, this would also create job opportunities for potential entrepreneurs to start their own business.

This, he said, is consistent with the South African government’s drive to create jobs and curb unemployment.

“We envisage that this project will create more than 50,000 jobs over the next year and alleviate poverty,” Nxumalo said.

He explained that MTN Community Pay Phone rate is 90 cents per minute, whilst the equivalent pre-paid rate on average is R1.50 on local calls.

“The device can sell pin-less or virtual MTN airtime and provide reduced tariff of 90 cents per minute for Talk and Pay customers. The telephone unit is mobile and can be positioned in high traffic areas and allows entrepreneurs to harness the voice clientele opportunity,” he said.

According to him, since launch of the initiative they have been inundated with calls from both city and rural areas.

“The community uptake of these community phones has been overwhelming and we continue to sign up new users daily,” he said.

eTranzact proud itself as an award winning multi-application and multi-channel electronic switching and payment processing platform with operations in Nigeria, Ghana, Zimbabwe, Cote d’Ivoire, Kenya, South Africa and UK.
