Ndukwe provokes thoughts @ Champion lecture

This year’s Champion Better Society Lecture, holding today, has set the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA), Victoria Island, Lagos, agog as stakeholders in the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) sector troop in to grace the occasion with immense expectations of the guest lecturer.

The occasion, which has the Executive Vice-Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Dr. Ernest Ndukwe, as the guest lecturer will dwell on ‘Telecommunications in National Development.’

Industry key players gracing the 2007 lecture series said that it’s coming at an auspicious time as they expect Dr. Ndukwe to deliver thought-provoking paper.

Leading industry players who have confirmed their participation included the chairman, Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), Mr. Gbenga Adebayo; chairman, Nigerian Internet Registration Association (NiRA), Mr. Ndukwe Kalu; president, Nigeria Internet Group (NIG), Mr. Lanre Ajayi; president, Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON), Dr. Emmanuel Ekuwem, and president, IT Association of Nigeria (ITAN), Chief Jimson Olufuye, as well as the Executive Secretary, ATCON, Mr. Godwin Morgan.

Other key players confirmed for the annual event are President, Nigeria Computer Society (NCS), Prof. Charles Uwadia, and immediate past president of NCS, Dr. Chris Nwannenna and former presidents of ITAN, Messrs. Will Anyaegbunam, and Chris Uwaje, among others. Even the National president, National Association of Computer Science Students (NACOSS), Payo Mohammed, will be leading future industry leaders to the occasion.

Also attending is the Chief Operating Officer (COO), Globacom, Mr. Mohammed Jameel; Chief Executive, Celtel Nigeria, Mr. Adebayo Ligali; his counterpart at MTN Nigeria and MTel, Mr. Ahmad Farroukh and Mr. Ladi Williams, respectively.

Meanwhile, telecommunications operators and allied companies, under the aegis of ALTON and ATCON, have endorsed the choice of Dr. Ndukwe for the 2007 lecture.

Speaking to Daily Champion exclusively, ALTON chairman, Mr. Adebayo, said the industry was satisfied with the theme of the lecture; “Telecommunications in National Development.”

He paid glowing tribute to the guest speaker who he said was a superb telecommunications engineer. “The theme is appropriate for this time in our national development. And the speaker is a worthy superior, an engineer extraordinaire, an administrator par excellence and indeed a man of many parts,” Mr. Adebayo said.

In addition, Dr. Ekuwem of ATCON pledged his group’s support for the event in the light its “well-chosen theme.”

He described the NCC helmsman as a close friend who had been patriotic in his leadership of the regulatory agency in the past seven years.

Equally speaking, ATCON’s Executive Secretary, Mr. Morgan, commended the theme, emphasizing that Dr. Ndukwe “is easily the best disposed in the industry to discuss such a theme.”

He gave kudos to the management of Champion Newspapers Ltd. for the Champion Better Society Lecture initiative and charged members of ATCON not to let this opportunity pass them by, especially on the exhibition to showcase their products and services.
