Nokia ships 100m S60 devices

Global leader in mobile communications equipment manufacturer, Nokia, said at the weekend that it has shipped over 100 million S60 devices globally.

S60 software is built on Symbian’s Open Operating System (OS) and acclaimed as the world’s leading smartphone software, developed by Nokia and licensed to some of the industry’s top mobile device manufacturers.

Vice President, Mobile Software Sales and Marketing at Nokia, Mr. Matti Vänskä, noted that more and more of solution such as Symbian OS based on volume market attracts mobile innovation.

He also said that with this development, S60 further demonstrates its strong lead in the volume market, as handset vendors, operators, developers as well as internet service providers have increasingly recoginized the potential offered by multi-vendor platforms, such as S60.

Mr. Vanska equally said that this announcement represents a significant landmark for S60.

“We believe it inspires further innovation on S60. The open platform gives mobile users more choice and provides a platform upon which new applications and services can be built,” he said.

Mr. Vanska identified three key trends affecting the requirements for software platforms, namely the mobile device is becoming the hub for personal experiences, whether focused on imaging, business, music, navigation or video.

He equally said that the people are accessing Web 2.0 services and content with their mobile device while the third is that simplicity and intuitiveness of user experience are increasingly essential.

He pointed out that S60 has made application development considerably easier with the S60 3rd edition feature Pack 2.

In line with the introduction of Open C, he said, brings the standard C function libraries to S60 software, supporting increased productivity and improved time-to-market of applications.

“With Open C, developers can reuse existing code and focus on the mobility aspects of their applications,” he said.

He explained that S60 as announced, is the first mobile software platform with integrated widget support, bringing along the power of web technologies to the mobile, citing for instance that Widgets enriches the mobile experience as they create a personal web skill for a personal device, thus making it easy to create and bring web services to S60 devices using standards-based technologies, such as Ajax, JavaScript, CSS and HTML.
