Ericsson’s millionth base station for Nigeria

Global telecommunications equipment provider, Ericsson, would soon deliver and install its millionth radio Base Transceiver Station (BTS) to MTN Nigeria.

Disclosing this, Head, Corporate and Marketing Communications for East and West Africa at Ericsson, Mr. Olabode Sowunmi said that it would mark the first time ever, that any telecom networks vendor would attain the millionth mark in the production and installation of radio base stations.

He said that radio base stations are the telecom equipment that generate the radio signals which mobile phones require to be active and transmit information either voice calls or data.

Mr. Sowunmi also said that the Ericsson’s millionth base station, would be delivered by the company’s Key Account Manager for MTN Nigeria, Mr. Magnus Mchunguzi, stressing that MTN and Ericsson has, a long standing partnership, with a relationship spanning over a decade.

As said by Mr. Mchunguzi, the delivery is symbolic in many ways, “It signposts the robust growth of the Nigerian telecom industry and also reflects the growing attention which the Nigerian market continues to command globally.”

He emphasized that it also reflects the confidence with which Ericsson has always regarded the Nigerian market such that it has been in Nigeria for the past 30 years, “as a full fledged legal entity”.

He explained that within these years, Ericsson has provided vital technological support to the telecom industry in Nigeria.

“That millions of Nigerians are today connected and are able to make phone calls among themselves as well as most of the over two billion other phone users across the world, is in some part due to the support and services which Ericsson has rendered the country’s telecom industry” he said.

Mr. Mchunguzi added that Ericsson is proud of the economic growth and development, which it has helped to facilitate in the country, via telecommunications.

The millionth base station, he said, would be installed by MTN, a company whose history is closely associated with Ericsson, noting that as a Greenfield operator in South Africa in the early 1990s, MTN’s potential to become a leading telecom operator was clearly visible to Ericsson, hence it wasted no time rendering support to the then start-up.
