Broadband to increase Nigerians’ earning powers – NCC

Telecommunications regulator, Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has underscored the anticipated elevation of earning powers of Nigerians as its core reason for being on top of advocacy for broadband internet connectivity in the country.

This is coming on the heels of the second edition of the Stakeholders forum billed to take place in Lagos, has gotten new dates, as it would now be held on May 15, this year.

Head, Public Affairs, NCC, Mr. Dave Imoko gave this indication while commenting on the readiness of the commission to take active part in the forthcoming Stakeholders forum, which is in its second edition.

He said that NCC foresees the potential that is why it has mapped out strategies to champion the course of its penetration in the country.

“Broadband internet has the potential to elevate the common and ordinary Nigerian to higher status thereby increasing their earning power and social status,” he said.

Mr. Imoko also said that with this, the nation would witness an enhanced economic status, thereby availing the government through the commission should have accomplished its drive to empower Nigerians irrespective of their social status, place or economic background.

He emphasised that NCC would take the gospel of broadband internet access beyond the known cities.

“We realise very well that the bulk of our population resides in the rural areas. Broadband internet offers people wherever they may be the potential to actually increase their earning powers,” Mr. Imoko said, stressing that the only challenge so far is for the populace to be aware of the platform and take advantage of it.

“And this is why the NCC is going all out to create awareness, educate the populace and rouse them to take advantage of the potentialities that broadband internet offers and better their economic status,” he declared.

Also speaking on the Stakeholders forum being organised in collaboration with IT & Telecom Digest and NCC, the editor-in-Chief of the digest, Mr. Mkpe Abang, revealed that the event with the theme: “Broadband Internet – New Phase of Nigeria’s ICT Revolution,” with the sub-theme: “Driving Access to ICT with Broadband Internet – Prospects, possibilities, challenges,” now has a new date.

He pointed out that Nigerians are eager to learn about the broadband technology and hope it has for the nation’s populace.

“Originally we planned this event for May 4, but exigencies of the times have warranted us moving the date to May 15, 2007,” he asserted, adding that his office has been inundated with inquiries on the forum, which he said, portends positive trend.

In addition, Mr. Abang said that by supporting the forum on this topic, NCC has proved on more than one occasion that it has the interest of Nigerians at heart.

He further said, that apart from lead presentations to be made by the NCC top echelon, strong participation is expected from all sectors of ICT in the country.
