Nigerian media have been tasked to take the continental Siemens Profile Awards seriously, just as the award has been formally launched in the country for this year.

Managing Director, Siemens Limited Nigeria, Mr. Klaus-Peter Gilbert, made this call at the formal presentation of prizes to the Nigerian category and merit winners respectively at the firm’s head office in Lagos.

Represented by the Deputy Managing Director (DMD) Mr. Reinhart Stiglmayr, at the occasion, Mr. Gilbert also said that Nigerian media ranks among the best journalism practicing nations of the world.

“We’re quite proud of your professional competence and therefore challenge you to take the Profile Awards serious,” he advised.

Stressing that if they stick to his advice, “we would have more winners emerging from Nigeria in the next edition. We trust you can do it,” he declared.

Siemens Nigeria, he said, had observed that potential participants from this part of the continent sent in entries late, especially in the last edition.

Noting that mass participation from the nation’s media practitioners would definitely enhance the chance of Nigeria winning more laurels in subsequent editions.

He expressed the hope that by this time next year, “We will have more of you winning the awards. To the winners, I say once again congratulations, just as he advised them to visit www.profileawards.co.za for details.”

ITRealms Online recalls that Messrs Remmy Chuks Nweke and Isaac Umunna; senior reporter on Information and Communication Technology (ICT) with Champion Newspapers and General Editor at Africa Today magazine, emerged category and merit winners in the Information Technology (IT) Business Solution category and Technology Policy and Investment in that order.

Earlier in his welcome note, the Corporate Communications Manager at Siemens Nigeria, Chief Rufus O. Odusanya, pointed out that the awards were instituted in 2001 by Siemens Southern Africa, but was in 2004 opened for the entire continent in order to advance knowledge and understanding of science and technology in Africa.

Emphasizing that Profile Awards recognize reportage that is enlightened, well researched, balanced and accurate as well as reflecting both technological research and market context.

“The awards focus on excellence in print, electronic and broadcast media by recognizing Africa based journalists, who through their reporting have made science and technology more easily accessible to lay audiences,” he asserted.

Underscoring that Siemens equally acknowledge the enormous impact science and technology have on contemporary society.

He formally declared that media practitioners in the country could submit entries for any or all of the 10 categories, namely energy, industry - basic industry such as mining, manufacturing industry includes automotive, medical solutions/healthcare, transportation, telecommunications: mobile, fixed, business solutions (IT), corporate social investment including training, diversity management, technology policy and investment.

Whereas judges drawn usually from the media, academics and technologists look out for display of adequate research, grasp of subject matter, clear and concise writing, individual style and presentation, analytical ability to unbundled technology.

Later, the prizes including Fujitsu Siemens brand of Personal Computer (PC) was presented to the category winner and certificate of merit to the merit winner.
